Samsung reports its financial results for Q2 2022, with excellent earnings from SDC, confirms it is developing microdisplay technologies

Samsung Electronics reported its financial results for Q2 2022, with record second-quarter revenues of 77.2 trillion Won ($59 billion USD).

Samsung Display reported record second-quarter revenue and operating profit for mobile displays driven by solid demand from major customers. Samsung specifically mentions the growth in its laptop OLED business. Performance in the large panel business was weaker due to initial ramp-up costs of Samsung's QD-OLED displays, and a decline in LCD prices.

DSCC: the OLED market will grow 2% in 2022, led by strong demand for IT panels

DSCC estimates that the OLED market will increase 2% in 2022, to reach $42 billion. Revenues for smartphones, the leading OLED application, will actually decline by 4%, but this will be offset by increases in other applications.

In fact, some applications will experience very fast growth: OLED monitors (641% unit growth, 279% revenue growth), OLED laptops (64% units, 39% revenue) and automotive displays (73% units, 68% revenue).

A study by LG Display shows that OLED is the optimal gaming display technology

LG Display says that according to an original research it has conducted, OLED is the optical gaming display technology.

In this research, several gamers played different gaming genres on LCD and OLED displays, and on curved and flat displays. The study results show that a gamer’s reaction time can be improved by using OLED, while a display’s curvature provides a more immersive gaming experience.

LG Display shows its latest OLED displays at SID DW 2022

LG Display has unveiled a new foldable OLED panel, that can fold 360-degrees - both inwards and outwards. The panel is 8.03" in size with a resolution of 2480x2200, and has been tested for over 200,000 folding cycles. LGD says it developed a special folding structure to minimize creasing.

Samsung's QD-OLED panels receive two new SGS certifications for pro gaming and eye care

Samsung Display announced that its QD-OLED displays received two new certifications from SGS - Pro Gaming Verified and Eye Care Display.

SDC says that the QD-Displays received high marks for outstanding image quality and viewing experience for games and high-definition content, while simultaneously reducing eye stress and fatigue. Back in January Samsung's QD-Displays received three SGS certifications for True Color Tones, Pure RGB Luminance and Ultrawide Viewing Angle.

Samsung Electronics and SDC have not yet finalized the QD-OLED supply agreement

According to a report from Korea, Samsung Electronics haven't yet finalized its agreement with Samsung Display regarding the supply of QD-OLED TV panels.

It seems that Samsung Electronics wants to get the QD-OLED TV panels at a price equal to what LGD is offering its WOLED TV panels, but SDC cannot accept this. If the two companies cannot agree on a price quickly, Samsung will have to delay the launch of its QD-OLED TVs (the current plan is to start shipping the TVs in mid-2022).

LG Display reports its Q4 2021 financial results, with a 18% increase in revenue from 2020

LG Display reported its Q4 2021 financial results. Revenues increased 18% compared to Q4 2020, and reached $7.3 billion, while net income fell to $150 million down from $500 million a year ago. LGD says that the drop in profit is due to one-off costs related to employee bonuses, and lower LCD panel prices.

For the whole of 2021, LG Display recorded all-time high revenues of $25 billion, with a 23% increase over 2020.

Samsung and Dell announce 34" QD-OLED gaming monitors

Both Samsung Electronics and Dell have announced new gaming monitors that both use the same 34" curved QD-OLED panel. As we reported last year, SDC started to produce 34-inch QD-OLED panels and it is great to see the first products already launched.

Dell's Alienware AW3423DW gaming monitor sports a curved 34-inch QD-OLED panels that offers a resolution of 3440x1440, 175Hz refresh rate and a response time of 0.1 ms. The AW3423DW supports Nvidia G-Sync and is DisplayHDR 400 True Black certified. Dell says the monitor will ship by March 2022.

DSCC: Apple's first VR headset will sport two OLED microdisplays and an additional AMOLED

Towards the end of 2021 we reported that Apple plans to launch its first AR headset in Q4 2022, powered by dual 4K OLED microdisplays, produced by Sony

According to Ross Young from DSSC, Apple first headset will actually be a VR headset, that uses a foveated display system. The headset will feature three displays - two 4K microLEDs (indeed produced by Sony) and one larger AMOLED display.
