Consumers are ready for an OLED laptop, at least according to our poll

In the last couple of years, we have seen OLED displays starting to be adopted in high-end laptop devices, and recently prices of OLED laptop panels have dropped and more mid-range laptops have opted for OLED displays (usually as an optional upgrade over an IPS LCD).

Will you next laptop featurean OLED display? (poll, 2021-08)

I recently bought a new laptop, the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Pro OLED, with a 14-inch 2880x1800 (2.8K) 90Hz AMOLED display. The screen, as expected from an OLED, looks brilliant. Some people are still concerned about OLED in laptops, though. Some worry that the display might suffer from burn-in.

We ran a poll on our social media channels (Twitter and LinkedIn), the results of which you can see above. Over 50% of the people who answered the poll (a total of 184) said that their next laptop will have an OLED. About 18% are concerned enough of burn-in so they would not opt for an OLED. Of course these are by no mean statistically relevant poll, as our social media followers are likely most from within the industry.

My Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Pro OLED laptop (2021-08)

My laptop is still only a couple of weeks old, so I cannot say much about burn-in. But OLED laptops have been around for a couple of years now, and we haven't heard of any consumer complains. Prices have also come down, to the part where even relatively affordable laptops can be bought with high-end OLED displays.

Samsung Display, the leading IT OLED producer is optimistic about the demand for OLED laptop displays, and is aiming to dramatically increase its production capacity. Other OLED makers are also ramping up production of 11-inch to 15-inch OLED panels specifically for the laptop market.

If you're interesting in buying OLED panels for your next device, the OLED Marketplace lists severral suitable displays, including foldable 12.8-inch and 15.6-inch options. We have recently gained access to 15.6" 4K AMOLED panels made by EDO at an excellent price.

This idea that consumers are scared of OLED burn in or other issues is a complete lie. The old saying "the loudest voices are the also the fewest voices." Meaning just because a few people online keep crying about how they will never buy OLED, does NOT mean that reflects the actual market. There are people right now RUINING video games because they wont shut the !@#$ up, and game development studios looking for consumer input think those loud voices represent the ENTIRE community. But they don't. Which also comes down to being lazy and not sampling more people. I constantly see on reddit that people will never buy OLED. In reality, OLED is out selling all other brands when it comes to TV's, as long as the person can afford one. Obviously someone looking for an 800 dollar TV or less wont be buying OLED, but if you are spending around $1500 or more, most likely you end up with OLED. Even now with laptops, I see more people absolutely going nuts over OLED laptops and how happy they are. Meanwhile in the gaming monitor market, they are still shoving the same SLOW pixel response TN/VA/IPS monitors down our throats. A FEW cry "I don't want burn in I wont buy OLED" but the majority of us, would 100% buy an OLED gaming monitor....
