Lux Research ranks Novaled as one of the top 10 most promising enterprises list

Lux Research posted their top ten most promising enterprises for Q1 2012 - and they include Novaled in their list. Lux analyzed 380 companies active in 16 different emerging technology domains, and they gave Novaled strong marks in all of their metrics, with remarkable scores in metrics such as technology value, IP position, partnerships, addressable market and team.

A year ago Novaled announced plans for an IPO on the NASDAQ with an aim to raise $200 million, but it's been a while since we heard any news on the IPO. Recent reports suggest that both Doosan and Samsung's Cheil Industries are considering to acquire Novaled.

Sony shows 30" and 56" 4K OLED monitor prototypes, the 30" ones will arrive in 2014

Update: we've got some new details on those new OLED panels from sony

Sony has some interesting news for us at NAB 2013. First up are new 4K OLED monitor prototypes (30" 4096x2160 and 56" 3840x2160). And the good news is that Sony actually plans to release the 30" ones in 2014.

Sony also updated their TRIMASTER EL professional OLED monitors with the new A Series. These new monitors use an improved panel that has a wider viewing angle and reduced color shift (by half, compared to previous models). The new series includes the BVM-E250A/BVM-E170A cinema/broadcast monitors, the BVM-F250A/BVM-F170A TV production and broadcasting monitors and the PVM-2541A/PVM-1741A picture monitors.

LG to postpone OLED TV shipments in the US for the second half of 2013

The Consumer Electronics Daily reports that LG Electronics decided to postpone its 55EM9700 OLED TV launch in the US for the second half of 2013. LG originally intended to start offering it in March for $12,000. It seems that the company cannot make enough panels to supply for the US market.

LG is currently shipping OLED TVs in Korea, and has also launched it in the UK (shipments will begin in July). Now it seems that the US will have to wait a bit for the first OLED TV...

DisplaySearch sees a $11 billion OLED market in 2013, shows OLED vs LCD price comparison

DisplaySearch expects the AMOLED market to reach $11.3 billion in 2013, up 60% from 2012 ($6.9 billion). The market is still dominate by a single supplier (Samsung Display) and a single customer (Samsung), and it's still too early to tell whether OLEDs can really become a mainstream market.

DisplaySearch also released the interesting chart above that shows price comparison between AMOLED and LCD (a-Si and LTPS) panels. Most of the growth in 2013 will come from the 4.99" Full-HD (441 PPI) panel used by the GS4, and DisplaySearch estimates that 52 million of these panels will be produced in 2013 (over $3.2 billion in revenues).

Kyushu University delayed fluorescence OLED emitters explained

In December 2012 we posted about Japan's Kyushu University new rare-metal free fluorescent OLED emitter materials that achieve 100% emission efficiency. Now the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE) released a new video featuring Kyushu's professor Chihaya Adachi. Following a rather long introduction into his lab and his own biography, professor Adachi explains their thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) technology (also called hyperfluorescence).

Adachi says that are seeking a commercialization partner, and they still need to study the degradation mechanism and expand the emission spectrum. Towards the end of this video you can view a couple of prototype monochrome (green) panels that use their new emitters.

An introduction to CPI's OLED prototype line facility

The Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) is a UK based R&D institute that helps companies develop and scale manufacturing processes. The CPI sent us the following video and update on its OLED/OPV prototype line (built by MBraun) that was designed to enable materials companies, device designers and end users to develop their technology within a fully automated, controlled environment.

CPI's system supports both small evaporized and soluble OLED materials. The line uses slot die technology to allow the coating of substrates in a highly repeatable and reproducible manner with a uniform film thickness of under 50 nm.

Nanomarkets: solution-processed OLED materials to take up 47% of the OLED market by 2019

Nanomarkets released a new white paper about solution-Processed OLEDs. They estimate that in order for the OLED market to grow significantly for TV and lighting applications, companies must adopt solution-processable materials. Soluble OLEDs have been researched for years with very little outcome outside of the lab. But Nanomarkets believes that the current problems can be fixed, and are worth fixing.

Soluble OLED materials and appropriate processes are being researched by Sumitomo, DuPont, Pioneer, UDC, Solvay, Marck and others. They estimate that the first panels to be made using these materials will be Pioneer's (together with Mitsubishi) OLED lighting panels - planned for 2014. Nanomarkets thinks that if Pioneer succeeded, it may push GE back into the OLED game with their own soluble material solutions. It's interesting that Nanomarkets does not mention Panasonic's OLED TV prototype that uses Sumitomo's P-OLED materials.

Samsung's Cheil Industries is also considering a bid for Novaled

The Wall Street Journal reports that both Doosan and Samsung's Cheil Industries are considering to acquire Novaled. Two weeks ago we reported that Doosan wants to buy Novaled for $270-360 million, but now it seems that Samsung is also interested in the German OLED material maker.

The report suggests that Cheil hasn't yet decided to submit a bid, and may actually only offer to buy a stake in Novaled. Samsung is already a shareholder in Novaled. A year ago Novaled announced plans for an IPO on the NASDAQ with an aim to raise $200 million.
