Samsung says that by the end of next week they'll sell 2 million Galaxy S phones in the US. They sold 1 million units in 45 days, and it seems that they're actually selling them faster now. The Galaxy-S, Samsung's latest Android phone, has a 1 Ghz processor and a large 4" Super-AMOLED display.

The Holst Centre will cooperate with Coherent on flexible electronics. The Holst Centre will install a short-pulse (picosecond) laser source in the electronic foils processing equipment to be used for high-precision and low-defect laser ablation in sheet-to-sheet production of OLED and OPV devices.

The potential of the laser to comply with short processing times allows the transition towards roll-to-roll at a later stage in the collaboration which is important for low cost production. Coherent intends to take the results of the application and use it to expand its knowledge in flexible electronics manufacturing.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded three new OLED lighting small-business grants to Universal Display. The largest project is in Phase II already, and is focused on the development of ultra-high-efficiency phosphorescent OLEDs for lighting applications". UDC will produce a white OLED that features 120lm/W efficiency by improving out-coupling of light from the OLED structure through high-index substrates and low-voltage operation.

The second will focus on thermal management issues and optical improvements. UDC will make 15cm square panels with various designs, to see the thermal impacts of each. Lower temperature operation will help to extend the lifetime of the OLEDs.

Engadget has tested Nokia's new CBD display (in a prototype E7) against the iPhone's S-LCD. Both do not perform very good in intense, direct sunlight, but the CBD has a very slight edge as it offers better visibility in extreme viewing angles.

Samsung's NX100 is now shipping in the UK for £558 ($870). We do not have a US price or release date yet. The NX100 is an APS-C (micro-four-thirds) DSLR camera (the successor to the NX10) with a 14.6mp sensor, 3" AMOLED display, 720p movie recording and an optional GPS module. The NX100 uses Samsung's new i-Function lens system that uses the focus ring to change other photo parameters as well.

HTC has already switched to S-LCDs in their Desire and Nexus-One phones - due to AMOLED supply shortage. They say that they look pretty much the same, but the S-LCD actually uses less power. Now we hear that they might do the same for the Droid Incredible phone - which was also suffering from supply issues.

Samsung announced that they can't meet customer demand in their AMOLED plant - and they won't be able to do so until early next year (at the earliest).

We heard that LG Display has decided to stop making 15" OLED panels, and the product has already reached End-Of-Life status. LG Display doesn't even have samples to ship to potential customers. LG Electronics is still selling the EL9500 OLED TV (at least they do so in the UK and in Germany). Marshall and TVLogic have professional monitors based on those panels, it'll be interesting to see whether they're able to ship those.

This is very strange, as LG plans to start making 31" OLED panels in March 2011 - so why stop making 15" ones? Perhaps they cannot make both in the same production line and had to stop making the smaller ones before they gear up to produce 31" panels.

Nokia has launched three new smartphones today, two of which (The E7 and the C6-01) use Nokia's new Clear Black Display (CBD) technology which is said to perform better outdoors than a normal AMOLED. Nokia says that the display is a polarized AMOLED. This might actually be just Nokia's name for a Samsung made Super-AMOLED display, we do not know yet.

Engadget really likes the display: "The screen is simply gorgeous -- ClearBlack may be a gimmicky trademark, but CBD's black levels are no joke. We're definitely talking Super AMOLED degrees of awesome...".

Update: There are actually three new phones, the C6-01, C7 and E7.

Nokia has just announced three new Smartphones - the E7, C6 and the C7. All use AMOLED touch displays. The E7 has a 4" display, the C7 a 3.5" one and the C6 a 3.2" one. The E7 and C6 displays use Nokia's new ClearBlack Display technology (CBD) - which is said to deliver better outdoor visibility.

The phones will be released towards the end of 2010, in Europe. The E7 will cost €495, the C6 will cost €260 and the C7 will cost €335.

Mexican design studio Agent has designed a couple of OLED lighting concepts for Konica-Minolta. The first one is called Wearable band of light - 'cool, wrap-on accessories that glow with light and can be worn around your body, matching your personality". The bands are bendable, thin, light and can be curved any way you like. Agent says this is a hybrid of jewelry + safety element + wearable light.

The second design is called Strip Light - a bus stop with illuminated timetables and neighborhood maps. This design also uses flexible OLED panels.
