LGD reports its financial results for Q2 2023, is on track in its 6-Gen line, but delays plans for an 8-Gen laptop OLED line

LG Display reported its financial results for Q2 2023, with revenues of 4.74 trillion Won ($3.7 billion USD) - up 7% from last quarter, and an operating loss of 881 billion Won ($690 million USD). LGD says that demand for display panels increased during the quarter.

LGD is on track to begin mass production of medium-sized panels in the first half of 2024, building a new 6-Gen production line, that is reportedly aimed to supply for Apple's iPad Pro, the first Apple tablet to sport an AMOLED display.

Apple said to reduce its planned Vision Pro production volume as Sony cannot ship enough OLED microdisplays in 2024

Apple recently announced the Apple Vision Pro VR headset, with dual 4K OLED microdisplays produced by Sony. Sony's production capacity was known to be limited, and it was estimated that its entire capacity is around 900,000 units per year.

A new report by the Financial Times now suggests that Apple originally planned to produce around a million Vision Pro units in 2024, but it has scaled down its plan and now aims to produce only 150,000 units. The reports suggest that critical components are to blame, but it remains to be seen whether Apple will actually be able to sell a large number of these highly expensive devices.

AUO may close down its AFPD OLED fab in Singapore as it focuses on microLED for next-gen wearable and automotive displays

AU Optronics has a 4.5-Gen AMOLED production line in Singapore, active since around 2013. The AFPD line is a small-scale operation, and AUO never managed to expand its capacity and compete with large AMOLED producers.

According to a report from Japan, AUO is now considering closing down the AFPD line, and converting it to microLED R&D production line. It could move it back to Taiwan, or retain Singapore as a hub for AUO in Southeast Asia. The company will make a final decision, it seems, in early 2024.

Coherent launches a new UV laser for high-speed cutting of OLED displays

Industrial laser developer Coherent announced a new Monaco industrial ultraviolet (UV) femtosecond laser with 50 W of output power. The company says that the new laser, the first 50 W 400 fs UV laser with proven 24/7 industrial-grade performance, is ideal for high-speed, high-volume cutting of stacked-OLED displays. 

This laser is used to cut the OLED displays after they are fully produced, which is why Coherent uses the term stacked-OLED (it does not refer to an OLED display with a stacked - or tandem - emitter design). The laser cutting enables shapes, notches and holes. Coherent updates that it installed over 800 Monaco laser systems worldwide (not all at OLED display fabs, though, the Monaco systems are also used in other applications).

JDI announced it will acquire JOLED IP and some of its employees, but will not acquire its production facilities and technology

A few months ago we reported that Japan-based inkjet printing OLED developer JOLED has filed for bankruptcy, and that Japan Display (JDI) will take over JOLED's technology and operations. JDI released an official statement regarding JOLED and its plans for the future.

So indeed on March 7 2023, JDI signed a basic agreement to support JOLED. Since then the two companies held 'extensive discussions', following which JDI decided to form a subsidiary company called 'JDI Design and Development' or JDIDD, that will acquire JOLED’s OLED technology development business and all related operations.

BOE is facing delays in its plan to build an 8.5-Gen IT OLED line

BOE has plans to construct an 8.5-Gen AMOLED production line with a capacity of 30,000 monthly substrates to produce IT displays for laptops, tablets and monitors. The company aims to build the B16 factory in Chengdu, Sichuan.

Samsung Display starts ordering equipment for its 8.6-Gen IT OLED production line

According to report from Korea, Samsung Display has established a dedicated organization to head its new 8.6-Gen IT OLED Production line, and has started to order equipment. Samsung is converting an existing LCD line in Asan to OLED production, with an estimated cost of $3.1 billion.

According to the report, SDC's decision to have a dedicated organization was made to give that team independence from the company's current small-area (smartphone/wearable) focused business and TV-focused business.

China's largest OLED substrate glass production line to reach mass production in August 2023

China's largest OLED substrate (carrier) glass production fab has initiated production, with full production is expected by August this year.

This is the first phase of the production hub planned at the Weifang Optoelectronics Display Materials Industrial Park, in Shandong province. Total investment in this line was 1.4 billion yuan (around $200 million USD), and the construction of the 2nd phase in this project has now started as well. The total investment in the four planned production lines will reach around $720 million USD.

Visionox new ViP OLED technology uses photolithography-based patterning to increase display performance

Visionox is introducing a new OLED production technology, called Visionox Intelligent Pixelization (or ViP for short) that enables higher-density display production, at over 1,700 PPI.

The idea behind ViP is to replace the fine metal mask (FMM) method with photolithography-based pixel patterning. The process offers several advantages, mainly the increase of aperture ratio to almost 70% (Visionox says the currently reach 69%). FMM methods usually achieve up to 30%, which means that brightness, efficiency and lifetime can all be increased.
