Nanomarkets sees a major decline in OLED lighting prices in the next 2 years

Nanomarkets released a new OLED lighting market report (OLED Lighting Market Forecast Q2 2012), in which they forecast that OLED lighting panel prices will drop sharply in the next two years as mass production will start. This will have a negative effect on revenue in the near future but will improve when OLED lighting will become mainstream in residential and lighting markets. Nanomarkets expects that the total market for OLED lighting luminaires will reach approximately $6.3 billion in 2017.

Nanomarkets believes that OLED lighting has the potential to seriously compete with the standard fluorescent lighting panels widely used in offices through improved energy efficiency, lower costs and improved aesthetics. In fact the commercial and industrial buildings applications will amount to over 75% of the revenues in 2017. Niche markets (which will account for more then 90% of OLED sales in 2012) will only amount to 1% of total OLED lighting revenues.

Nanomarkets muses on OLED lighting in a low-growth world

Nanomarkets posted an interesting article discussing what a low-growth world means for OLED lighting. They say that while OLEDs has been touted as a high-efficiency lighting technology, this feature alone will not be enough to gain real market share in the lighting industry as the developed world is experience difficult financial times.

There are still technology challenges that needs to be overcome, and companies need to commit to mass production before OLED lighting will begin to sale in meaningful quantities. Nanomarkets also laments the lack of industry leadership - they hoped that GE will be the leader, but it seems that their solution-processable OLED approach is not advancing as everybody hoped, and other companies aren't talking about mass production yet. It seems clear that it'll take at least 3-4 years for the OLED lighting market to actually emerge.

Nanomarkets: OLED lighting to take off in 2014, material sales to reach $1 billion in 2015

NanoMarkets released a new report on OLED lighting materials. In this report they forecast that OLED lighting will take off in 2014, and will start to generate significant revenues for material suppliers. How significant? $1 billion in sales in 2015.

The company says that emissive layer material sales will top $375 million in 2015, with 90% of this coming from vapor-deposited small molecule materials. The report discusses the continuing dominance of UDC in important sectors of the OLED lighting market and the increasingly important role of Chinese OLED materials suppliers.

Nanomarkets discusses OLED lighting makers future

Nanomarkets posted a very interesting article about the OLED lighting industry - trying to answer whether it's realistic to expect commercialization by 2015.

Here are some of the main points they raise in the article:

  • OLED lighting will not be commercially available before 2015.
  • Nanomarkets assumes that the large lighting makers (such as GE, OSRAM, Philips) are investing in OLEDs because they believe that they will enter the general lighting market and will not remain a premium niche
  • No plans for mass-production plants yet from anyone
  • Nanomarket sees many small companies to emerge that will employ the fabless model - they will design panels but other companies (OLED lighting foundries) will produce them
  • Low cost manufacturing technology isn't ready yet
  • Lack of production capacity can be a major hurdle to the expansion of the OLED Lighting industry

Nanomarkers to host a one-hour OLED Lighting webinar on August 2nd

Nanomarkets will host a one-hour OLED Lighting webinar on August 2 (8:00 am Pacific Daylight Time). This webinar will provide a guide to the opportunities that NanoMarkets sees arising in the OLED Lighting space. It will examine how OLED lighting performance is evolving, how OLED lighting form factors are likely to evolve to fit the needs of the existing lighting infrastructure, and where OLED lighting will generate early revenues.

In addition, this webinar will take a look at the strategies of the leading firms in OLED lighting, where the manufacturing plant is being installed today and what kind of processing technologies are being deployed for OLED lighting. The webinar will also report on how the first supply chains for OLED lighting are evolving.

Nanomarkets: OLED material sales to reach $2 billion by 2016

Nanomarkets released a new report (The Market for OLED Materials 2011) in which they predict that OLED display and lighting material sales will exceed $2 billion in 2016. Mass market for OLED TV and OLED lighting will emerge in 2013 to 2015 which will boost the OLED material market.

Nanomarkets also believe that there will be more IP challenges and a trend towards "reverse engineering". Most OLED panels will use small molecules, but polymer OLEDs will begin to appear and will generate over $255 million by 2016 (i.e. around 12% of the total OLED marker).

Nanomarkets: the OLED lighting market in Asia will generate $2.1 billion by 2016

Nanomarkets released a new report (OLED Lighting Markets Asia - 2011) in which they predict that the market opportunities in Asia for OLED lighting will generate $2.1 billion by 2016.

Key findings from the report:

  • Japan will dominate the OLED lighting business through 2014 despite lingering issues from the earthquake and tsunami. LEDs were quick to be adopted in Japan, and they will do the same with OLEDs. Meanwhile, Japanese firms are taking up key positions in every part of the worldwide OLED lighting supply chain from design and manufacture through to wholesale distribution. Sales of OLED lighting in Japan are expected to reach $1.1 billion by 2016.
  • The OLED lighting market in China is limited - and will reach $420 million by 2016.
  • OLED lighting in Korea is still in its infancy, and sales will reach only $230 million by 2016. But Samsung and LG have great influence in this market. Nanomarkets thinks that Samsung has a great potential in this market.
