Ergis extends its OLED encapsulation film platform to QD films

Last year, Poland-based Ergis Group launched an OLED encapsulation film platform called Ergis noDiffusion®. The company is currently testing its film solutions at customer sites in Asia, the EU and the US, and it is now starting to expand the platform for the protection of quantum dot films (QD films) used in display and lighting applications.

These new films can be tuned to fit specific needs. Ergis can deploy its films on several substrate types, with varying film thickness, and the barrier properties can be tuned to be between 10-6 to 10-3. This means that custom films can be created to suit the specific sensitivity of the QDs for water vapor and to achieve specific product lifetime or other required properties.

BOE shows new OLED technologies at SID Displayweek 2021

BOE demonstrates several new OLED technologies at SID Displayweek 2021. First up is a new rollable display. The new display is 8-inch in size, and it features a resolution of 2592x2176 and a bending radius of 4 mm. BOE says the new display passed over 200,000 sliding cycles.

Last year at Displayweek 2020, BOE demonstrated a 12-inch rollable OLED. It has since been working with LG Electronics on the company's rollable smartphone (which was since canceled as LG withdrew from the smartphone market) and with OPPO on a 7.4-inch sliding OLED phone.

Samsung Electronics reports its Q1 2021 results

Samsung Electronics reported its financial results for Q1 2021. The company's revenues was 65.4 trillion Won (around $58.7 billion USD). Operating profit increased 4% from the past quarter to $8.4 billion, as Samsung enjoyed strong sales of phones and consumer electronics, which offset slower sales of displays and semiconductors.

The past quarter saw a fall in the revenues of Samsung's display business, due to weak seasonality of mobile products and a shortage of chips.Compared to Q1 2020, however, earnings improved due to increased adoption of OLED displays in smartphones.

TCL brings perovskite-QDs enhanced LCDs to market, in a pilot project

TCL collaborated with perovskite QD film developer Zhijing Nanotech to produce 500 75-inch QD-enhanced LCD TVs with Zhijing's PQDF films. This is likely to be the world's first commercial adoption of pQD films in the display industry, as the TVs were sold successfully in China and Zhijing hopes to achieve a mass production design win with TCL in 2021

The company reports that the TVs featured a wide color gamut, 147% BT709 - which is higher than most QD TV's on the market, and higher than TCL's original 75M10 TVs. The green Cadmium-free pQD films have excellent optical properties and offer lower cost compared to current QD solutions, according to Zhijing Nanotech.
