Planar launches its 2nd-Gen 55" transparent OLED signage displays likely based on LGD panels

In November 2015 Planar launched its LookThru displays, based on 55" FHD transparent OLED panels made by Samsung Display. SDC stopped producing these OLEDs shortly after, though, and Planar had to halt its sales.

In February 2019 LG Display launched its own 55" FHD transparent OLED production, and now Planar announced its 2nd-Gen LookThru (LO552) displays - which are likely based on LGD's panels this time.

Planar's new OLEDs feature a brightness of 150 cd/m2 (peak white brightness of 400 cd/m2) and a transparency of 38% and a color gamut of 120% NTSC. The LookThru displays do not support touch, it seems (LG Electronic's own transparent signage does include a touch layer).

Planar's original transparent OLED displays were quite pricey at $14,995 for the standard models. Hopefully this second generation displays will also be more affordable. Planar says that it will start shipping the displays in the summer of 2019 (i.e. in the next few months).

Planar says its new transparent OLEDs are ideal for a wide range of applications including retail merchandising, corporate displays, museum exhibits, award and trophy cases, and tradeshow exhibits.
