New OLED gadget: Vivo V30e

Vivo's mid-range V30e smartphone offers a 6.78" 120Hz 1300 nits 1080x2400 AMOLED display, a Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 chipset, 8 GB of RAM, up to 256 GB of storage and a microSDXC card slot.

The V30e will start shipping soon in India, starting at around $350.

Universal Display reports excellent financial results for Q1 2024

Universal Display announced its financial results for the first quarter of 2024. Total revenues were $165.3 million (up from $130.5 million in Q1 2023), and a net income of $56.9 million (up from $39.8 million).

UDC says it seas meaningful growth opportunities across several verticals: the IT display market, TVs, smartphones, and foldable phones. UDC raised the lower end of its guidance for 2024, now it believes it will be in the range of $635 million to $675 million.

Demand for Apple's Vision Pro is lower than expected, cuts its 2024 production plans by 50%

In February 2024, Apple started to ship its VR headset, the Apple Vision Pro, with its two Sony 1.3" 4K OLED microdisplays. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, a respected Apple analyst, the market reaction to Apple's HMD was much lower than expected, and Apple decided to slash its production plan from 800,000 units in 2024 to about 400,000.

The Vision Pro has been shipping in the US only, but it seems the company prefers to cut production rather than start to ship the headsets globally - a sign that it does not expect demand to be higher outside of the US. According to Kuo, Apple is likely to cancel its plan to release a new version in 2025.

New OLED gadget: Blackview Hero 10

The Blackview Hero 10 is a foldable smartphone, that has a 6.9" 1300 nits 1080x2560 foldable AMOLED display, tested for over 250,000 folds. The phone also offers a Helio G99 chipset, 12 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage, 4G connectivity, and a dual camera setup with a main 108MP Samsung HM6 sensor.

The Blackview Hero 10 will be the world's cheapest foldable OLED phone (replacing the Nubia Flip), starting at around $430. It is listed already at AliExpress but with a higher placeholder price, which will hopefully be soon corrected.

Korea's Great Train eXpress subway installs LGD's 55" transparent OLED displays

LG Display announced that Korea's newly launched Great Train eXpress (GTX) subway service has installed the company's 55" transparent OLED displays in the cabin windows.

This is the first subway service in Korea to install transparent OLEDs (similar projects have already been deployed in China, Russia, and Japan). The idea is that the OLEDs create a "comfortable and smart on-board experience by displaying varied content". LGD initally installed 16 OLED displays on a single train with eight cars running on the inaugural GTX line between Suseo and Dongtan. Going forward, the GTX plans to install OLED panels in all of its trains.

Kopin announces its third OLED microdisplay defense design win and order

Kopin Corporation  announced that it has received its third order for its OLED microdisplays, to be used in thermal imaging vision systems, for the Indian army. Kopin says that it will deliver over 1,200 microdisplays over a six-month time span.

Last month Kopin announced that it has a achieved two important milestones in its OLED projects. Kopin is in the process of establishing an OLED deposition partner in Europe, and the company has reported impressive performance improvements.
