Researchers develop a method to change the color and fluorescence of compounds using gases

Researchers from Japan developed a new method that can be used to change the color and fluorescence of compounds using oxygen and hydrogen gases. This is a reversible method that is environmentally friendly. The technique can find applications in sensors and control of organic semiconductors and OLED devices.

The researchers explain that they were able to perform a molecular switch in aromatic compounds that are commonly used in OLEDs, OPVs and other applications. The switch was performed using an orthoquinone moiety.

LGD admits it is late to the flexible OLED market, will gradually move production from LCD to OLED

Bloomberg posted an interesting story regarding LG's entry into the small/medium OLED market. LG's CEO, Han Sang Beom, is quoted saying that LGD intends to expedite its investments towards OLED production.

Han admits that LG Display is a "late comer" to this market (at least compared to Samsung Display) but as OLED is expected to go "mainstream" in the next few years (mostly following Apple's decision to adopt the technology in future iPhones) LGD has got to focus more on OLEDs. Han says that it is "undeniable that flexible OLEDs are now the mega-trend in the mobile segment".

NHK developed a new inverted-OLED device which requires almost no encapsulation

In 2013, the Japan Broadcasting Corp (NHK) and Nippon Shokubai developed a new OLED structure called inverted OLED, or iOLED, that drastically improves oxygen and moisture resistances. The basic idea behind iOLED is to invert the structure between the electrodes of a bottom-emission OLED. The electrodes are based on an organic material (polyethyleneimine) and not Lithium-based like most electrodes.

In 2015, NHK demonstrated a full-color iOLED display that uses a film substrate. The company now demonstrated the same display - more than one year after it was fabricated - still working even though there is almost no encapsulation.

UBI - Apple's OLED adoption will lead to $28.5 billion in OLED production equipment sales in the next 5 years

In past month there were dozens of reports stating that Apple will adopt an OLED display in its 2017 or 2018 iPhone and that Apple signed an agreement with SDC to be its first OLED supplier. Apple will require a huge amount of OLED displays, even if the first device will be a premium iPhone model, which will require large capacity expansion from SDC (and other suppliers that Apple will probably need to sign up).

According to UBI Research, Apple's decision to adopt OLED displays in its iPhones will result in $13 billion of production equipment orders by 2020. The capacity required for Apple will take up 47% of the global equipment market for 6-Gen flexible OLEDs ($28.5 billion in the next 5 years, according to UBI).

IHS sees the flexible display market reaching $15.5 billion in 2022

According to IHS, demand for flexible displays is set to increase as the popularity of wearable and mobile devices with flexible displays increase. IHS says that the market will be around $3.7 billion in 2016 - and this will grow to $15.5 billion in 2022.

In 2020 flexible displays will comprise 13% of the total display market. While currently the only devices that use flexible displays are phones and watches, this will expand to include tablets, near-eye VR devices, automotive and OLED TVs. IHS is counting both flexible OLEDs and E Ink displays.

Samsung applies for a QLED-TV trademark, is it planning a QLED TV soon?

Samsung Electronics applied for a QLED TV trademark in the US - the trademark specifically is Samsung QLED. In the application document, Samsung said QLED technology will be applied not only to TVs - but also to mobile phone displays, monitors - and other devices.

Samsung is already shipping quantum-dots enhanced LCD TVs, but a QLED display means that the quantum-dots are used as emissive materials - there's no need for a backlight or filter layers. These kinds of displays will be very similar to OLEDs.

LGD starts to install production equipment in its upcoming E5 flexible OLED line

In July 2015, LG Display announced it is going to invest $900 million to build a new 6-Gen flexible OLED fab. The E5 flexible OLED line will have a capacity of 7,500 monthly substrates - or 1.5 million 5.5" panels. The new fab is scheduled to begin mass production in the first half of 2017.

Yesterday LG Display said that it started to install production equipment in this upcoming new line, in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province. LG also released the nice photo you see above of the equipment transferred into the fab.
