UDC awarded small DOE contract to work on Enhanced Light Outcoupling in WOLEDs


Universal Display today announced that it has been awarded a $99,919 Small
Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I grant from the U.S.
Department of Energy (DOE) under the Department's
Solid State Lighting program.



The program, titled 'Enhanced Light
Outcoupling in WOLEDs', will focus on
demonstrating a novel technique to improve the optical outcoupling
efficiency of a white OLED. Through the use of this novel technique,
Universal Display intends to double the outcoupling efficiency,
resulting in an external quantum efficiency of about 50%.


 


Using the Company's high-efficiency
UniversalPHOLED(TM) technology, white OLEDs can
achieve up to a 100% internal quantum efficiency - meaning that all of
the electrical energy can be converted into light. Typically, only 20%
of that light is directed through the front surface as useful light;
however, an external component is often added to OLED panels to collect
and emit more light. By comparison, the novel approach proposed for this
project involves integrating an outcoupling enhancement directly within
the layers of the OLED device. This approach has the potential to double
the light output, while preserving the OLED's
thin form factor, and may also be significantly more cost effective to
manufacture. Such improvements are important for white OLEDs to achieve
the DOE's targets of 150 lumens per watt
(lm/W) with a cost of less than $50/Kilolumen.

OLED-T gone into liquidation

We hear rumors that OLED-T has been closed - gone into liquidation - and indeed their web-site is down. This is sad news, and rather surprising one, as they secured 7M$ just two years ago. 

OLED-T was developing high efficiency and long life-time materials for OLED displays. OLED-T had over 60 patents, and I wonder which company will pick those up.

Microsharp joins the OLED100.eu project

Microsharp (developing specialist optical films) has joined the EU funded OLED100.eu project. The OLED-100.eu is a follow-up project for OLLA, and the target is to create 100 lumens per watt power efficiency, 100,000+ lifetime hours at 100 euro per square meter. The time frame is 3 years.

Microsharp's contribution will be to the project will be to develop optical film structures to enhance efficiency and increase potential lifetimes through improved light outcouplings.

Samsung: Blu Ray has 5 years left, we're putting our faith in OLED technology

Andy Griffiths, director of consumer electronics at Samsung UK says that Blu-Ray has about 5 years left before it's replaced by a different format. Instead Samsung is putting its faith in its OLED technology. The new technology, which is "ready to rock", is being held back at the moment due to high manufacturing costs.

"We will launch the OLED technology when it's at a price that will be appealing to the consumer, unfortunately that's not yet." Griffiths, citing 2010 as a possible date for your calendar, told us he believes that when the technology becomes mainstream it will replace LCD. "It's gonna be big, but at the moment it's a great story, not commercial, product."
