Researchers develop an innovative efficient lighting source based on laser-excitated graphene

Researchers from the Institute of low temperature and structure research in Wroclaw, Poland, developed a new white light source based on graphene-foam. Graphene does not have a band-gap, but this device uses a continuous-wave laser to excitate the graphene and opens up a bandgap which results in light emission that UV to near-infralight.

The researchers say that the light spectrum of this device is similar to the spectrum of the sun which is better than current light sources such as LEDs that offer light spectrum with strong peaks (the main problem is the strong blue light emission in LED lighting). This design can achieve a high efficiency (over 200 lm/W), high color rendering index (CRI > 99) and a broadband warm white color. The lifetime depends on the laser, which can be over 10,000 hours.

EU researchers demonstrate a flexible 2 x 1 cm OLED lighting panel with graphene electrodes

The European GLADIATOR project, led by the Fraunhofer Institute, developed a functional flexible OLED lighting panel based on graphene electrodes. This new panel is 2 x 1 cm in size - much larger the previous prototype developed as part of that project last year.

The GLADIATOR project will conclude in April 2017. In the following months, the researchers aim to improve the graphene electrode by minimizing the impurities and defects that occur during the transfer of the graphene sheet. The project's leader, Beatrice Beyer, estimate that such OLEDs with graphene electrodes could be commercialization within 2-3 years. In September 2015 Graphene-Info posted an interview with Beatrice, discussing the technology behind this project.

GraphenExeter electrodes outperform pure-graphene electrodes for flexible lighting devices

A few years ago, Researchers at Exeter developed a new material called GraphExeter, which is made from compressed ferric chloride molecules between two sheets of graphene. This material has interesting properties, and recently the researchers started to study it as an electrode material for electroluminescent devices.

The researchers now report that GraphExeter is indeed effective as such an electrode - performing better than pure graphene. In fact, they state that it is capable of high luminosity - brighter than pure graphene by almost 50%. It's not clear exactly if they used this electrode on an OLED or on an EL lighting panel, but these are certainly interesting results.

Researchers demonstrate a transparent OLED with graphene electrodes

Researchers from Korea's ETRI Institute developed the world's first transparent OLED prototype that uses a graphene transparent electrode. A prototype display was demonstrated at SID 2016 last month.

The prototype display was 26x26 mm in size, with a resolution of 155x60 (121 PPI). The display was a monochrome (orange) display. In the display on show, the graphene-based electrodes were deposited on the backplane of the display.
