Ross Lovegrove is designing an affordable household OLED lamp for LGD

The Korea Herald reports that famed industrial designer Ross Lovegrove (who has designed Sony's Walkman, Apple's iMac and also worked with Airbus, Peugeot and Huawei) is currently working with LG Display to design an OLED lighting installation.

Ross's lighting structure will be an affordable OLED lamp for general household lighting - and it will be introduced next year. The installation will be unveiled next year at the Salone del Mobile (April 2017).

It will be interesting to see whether LG Display can really come up with an affordable consumer OLED lamp. LG's upcoming Gen-5 OLED Lighting fab is planned to start mass producing panels in the first half of 2017 - which hopefully means that the production cost of LG's panel will be reduced drastically (back in 2012 LG estimated that the Gen-5 fab will cut production costs by 95%). This means that in the second half of 2017 we may finally see affordable OLED lamps indeed.

Ross also says that he'd be interested in designing an OLED TV for LG in the future, although he didn't even talk to LG Display regarding this option yet.
