The OLED Marketplace - updated graphics and browsing options

OLED-Info's OLED Marketplace offers what we believe to be the world's largest OLED catalog. Today we updated the marketplace's graphics, adding new icons instead of the old photo-based interface.

DSCC sees 1.2 billion mobile AMOLED displays produced in 2021, SDC's market share to drop to 63%

Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) released some very interesting information regarding the mobile OLED market from its recent OLED market report by Yoshio Tamura and Ross Young. DSCC expects mobile AMOLED demand to grow from almost 400 million panels in 2016 to almost 1.2 billion in 2021.

Samsung Electronics, who's already using AMOLED displays in almost 80% of its smartphones will not increase its AMOLED orders by a lot, but shipments will grow dramatically to other players led by Apple, Huawei and Oppo.

Kateeva doubles its manufacturing space in order to meet the demand for its OLED inkjet systems

OLED ink-jet developer Kateeva announced that it expanded its headquarters in silicon valley - in fact it doubled its manufacturing space in order to meet the demand for its inkjet systems.

Kateeva leased a new building adjacent to its HQ adding 75,000 sq. ft - mostly for manufacturing and business operations. Kateeva's current headcount has reached 330 people as orders for its YieldJet systems soared.

Sumitomo to construct a $130 million flexible OLED touch panel production fab in Korea

Reports from Japan suggest that Sumitomo Chemical decided to setup a new factory to produce touch panels for curved AMOLED displays. The new factory will be located in Korea, and the total investment is expected to reach ¥15 billion ($US 132 million). It is expected to start operating in 2018 and will have an annual capacity of 100 million panels.

Digitimes says that Sumitomo has a current market share of about 60-70% of the total AMOLED touch panel market and can currently produce 400 million touch panels for rigid glass-based AMOLEDs. Sumitomo doubled its glass AMOLED touch panel capacity in 2016 following a $165 million investment at its Pyeongtaek factory.

Von Ardenne and the Fraunhofer FEP to intensify their cooperation on flexible glass coating

Von Ardenne announced that the company developed an innovative machine to process flexible glass. The FOSA LABX 330 Glass enables a roll-to-roll glass coating process. This first of its kind machine was developed as part of the German KONFECT project, launched in 2015, together with partners Fraunhofer FEP, Schott and Tesa.

Von Ardenne now says that it intends to intensify its cooperation with the Fraunhofer FEP in the flexible glass coating field. The Fraunhofer will present coating samples of glass produced using the new machine for the first time at LOPEC 2017.

PCAS to invest $4 million to significantly increase its organic electronics material production capacity

France-based specialty chemicals producer PCAS announced that it plans to invest $8 million in the next few years to significantly increase its production capacity of electronic materials. Half of that investment is dedicated to the organic electronics field.

PCAS is targeting the OLED, OPV, O-FET and sensor markets. The added capacity will mostly be installed at the company's Canadian plant (located in Saint-Jean, Quebec). PCAS offers evaporable small molecule, transparent electrode materials, conductive polymers and smart luminescent polymers.

LG starts shipping its entry-level OLEDC7 OLED TVs in the US

LG started to ship its entry-level OLEDC7 OLED TVs in the US - the 55" model costs $2,999 while the 65" one costs $4,497. The 55" model is actually out of stock at Amazon.com (yesterday it was still listed as avialable) but Amazon will ship new orders on the 9th of March.

The OLEDC7 is one of LG's basic models in its 2017 OLED TV lineup, an update to the OLEDC6 series from 2016. Interestingly, the C7 uses a flat panel (unlike the curved one in the C6). These OLED TVs (55" or 65") feature 4K resolution, HDR support (four different standards), WebOS 3.5 and Dolby Atmos sound.

LG reveals an AMOLED VR headset prototype

LG announced that it is developing a new VR headset that is powered by Valve's StreamVR tracking. LG demonstrated a prototype at the Game Developers Conference and revealed the specification of the device.

LG's VR headset uses dual 3.64" 1440x1280 (529 PPI) 90Hz OLED displays, produced by LG Display (which means that these are probably flexible OLEDs produced on plastic substrates). The headset provides a 110-degrees field of view, and LG is ready to make development kits later this month and will ship them to select partners.
