Remember LG's rollable smartphone that almost launched in 2021? You can now watch a teardown of one of the prototypes produced back then

Some years ago LG Electronics aimed to be the first company to release a rollable smartphone, hoping to launch it by the end of 2021. Later in 2021 LG Electronics closed its smartphone business, and the rollable OLED phone project was scrapped.

We're still waiting for the first rollable smartphone - which will hopefully happen soon (at least rollable laptops are now shipping, although these aren't real consumer products yet, seems). An interesting video review surfaced today, showing a teardown of a prototype LG Electronics rollable OLED smartphone - the one that almost shipped.

Rtings.com finds that OLED TVs are actually more reliable than LCDs

Rrings.com posted a very interesting article, in which they detail the results of their ongoing TV longevity test, in which they test 102 TVs to see which one lasts the longest. The test has been going on for three years. In general - most TVs were fine for the first 10,000 of use, but 20 TVs died during the test and 24 suffered from some sort of damage.

The most interesting takeaway is that OLED TVs actually suffered from less failures than LCDs. Most people assume that the lower lifetime of the organic materials (compared to the in-organic LEDs and LCs used in LCDs) means that the TVs are less reliable. But OLED burn-in has been consistently shown to be mostly a non-issue for most consumers, and the LED backlighting has a much higher chance of failure.

Inuru's flexible OLED holo tags - hands on review

A few months ago Inuru started shipping its range of OLED-powered stickers, or "holo tags" as the company refers to them. These are battery-powered flexible stickers that can be used for laptops or any other use.

The company was kind enough to send us three stickers, from their latest Cyberpunk range. These stickers cost around 20 Euros, and there are many alternative designs. The idea is that the flexible stickers include a small OLED, a battery and a button that lights up the OLED for a few seconds. The whole device is said to be waterproof, but I did not test it.

Inuru says that the lifetime of the OLED is about 5,000 hours. As the battery is limited, though, they say that each sticker is limited at around 2,500 clicks. Some of them use a red OLED, and some a blue one.

Some Apple iPad Pro customers complain of noticeable grain in the new OLED tablets

Earlier this month Apple announced its 2024 iPad Pro devices, Apple's first tablets with AMOLED displays, using tandem panels produced by LG Display and Samsung Displays. Some customers have complained about an annoying grain pattern in the new display:

This is especially noticeable in dark environments. It seems as if the 11" model is more affected by the 13" one. The 11" panel is produced exclusively by Samsung Display, while the 13" is made by both Samsung and LG Display. It could be that this is a problem only at Samsung's panels.
