Sony's new OLED TV to be called the KDL-ZX, to be introduced in CES 2010

There are rumors (coming from a leaked internal Sony document) that Sony's new OLED TV will be called the Sony KDL-ZX. No more information is available - although interestingly they say it's the KDL-ZX series, so maybe Sony will introduce several new OLEDs?

Sony were planning a 27" OLED TV, and later on showed new 21" prototypes, so it could be either, or both.

Konica Minolta lays out OLED Lighting plan, wants to get $1 billion in sales by 2017/18

Konica Minolta lays out its OLED Lighting plan:

  • Launch OLED lighting equipment by March 2011
  • Build a large-scale OLED lighting plant by march 2014
  • Get over 100 billion yen (about $1 billion) in sales by 2017/18

The company will spend around 3.5 billion yen ($38 million) to build an initial production line by the end of 2010, in order to launch products by March 2011. The line will use roll-to-roll production method. The mass-production line planned for 2014 will require at least 10 billion yen ($110 million) to build.

Konica Minolta is working towards OLEDs together with GE and UDC.

eMagin awarded $6 million to develop a ultra-high resolution OLED microdisplay for the US Army

eMagin announced today that they have been awarded a 2 year, $6 million program by the US Army to develop ultra-high resolution (1920x1200) OLED microdisplays. The project was awarded by the US Army Medical Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC), and the aim is to create a 3D-capable display system for advanced medical training systems.

The WUXGA (Widescreen Ultra eXtended Graphics Array) microdisplay is being designed to be sized less than one-inch diagonal with over 7 million pixels at a 9.6 micron color pixel pitch. The program also involves the design of optics for a wide field-of-view between 60 and 80 degrees. The culmination of this program is expected to provide a prototype of an ultra-high resolution display system suitable for several applications within Army medicine and military simulation and training, as well as for broad military and commercial uses.

Other participants in the program include Rockwell Collins and Columbia University.

LG Display shows a 20.7" QSVGA Medical OLED prototype

LG Display is showing a new 20.7" OLED Panel for the medical market. It has 2560x2048 resolution (QSVGA) and a contrast ratio  that is higher than 100,000:1. The high resolution and contrast meets the criteria required for medical displays.

There's no information yet regarding availability or price.

Samsung is considering a new 5.5th-generation OLED line for 30" TVs


Samsung Mobile Display is considering a new OLED line in Tangjeong (South-Chungcheong Province, Korea). The new line will be using 5.5th-generation technology for 30" OLED TVs. Total investment will be 1.5 trillion Won ($1.3 billion), although SMD says that the investment size will be decided by demand from clients such Samsung Electronics, Sony and Sharp.



The 5.5th generation technology will make OLED panels sized 1320mm x 1500mm.



SMD are currently making 20,000 4th generation OLED panels, and have around 90% market share.

Universal Display reports 2Q financial results, expects growth in OLED TVs in 2010 and beyond

Universal Display Corporation (UDC) announced their results for 3Q 2009. Revenue were $5.1M, out of which $1.6M came from chemical revenue, license and royalty payments and commercialization assistance.

UDC says they are seeing "increased advertising and marketing of our licensees' products that use AMOLED displays with their technology and materials", and an "increase of adoption" for these products. UDC expects growth in large-area OLED displays (OLED TVs) in 2010 and beyond.

UDC also reported that Kyocera has dissolved its OLED subsidiary.
