DSSC says foldable smartphone shipments dropped in Q4 2022 for the first time, but growth will return in Q2 2023

DSSC says that 3.1 million foldable smartphone shipped in Q4 2022, a drop of 48% compared to the previous quarter (and 26% compared to Q4 2021). This is the first time that the foldable smartphone market contracted.

DSSC says that the market was "overwhelmed by the launch of the iPhone 14 Series". Worsening global economic conditions also reduced demand. In the full year 2022, 12.9 million foldable phone shipped (a 62% increase over 2021), led by Samsung with a 83% market share.

Universal Display reports its Q4 2022 financial results

Universal Display Corporation reported its financial results for Q4 2022, with revenues of $169 million and a net income of $65 million. Looking at 2022 as a whole, revenues reached $617 million (up 11% from 2021) while net income was $210 million, up 14% from 2021. The company ended 2022 with $826 in cash and equivalents.

The company expects the OLED industry to begin a new investment cycle in 2024, but in the near term the company sees a "temporary backdrop", and so expects its 2023 revenues to be in the range of $550 million to $600 million.

DSCC says demand for smartphone and TV OLED displays will decline by 24% in the next quarter

DSCC says that OLED panel revenues were $12.6 billion in Q4 2022, down 3% from Q4 2021. Shipments declined by 7% compared to last year.

For the full year 2022, revenues reached $41.7 billion, a 1% decrease from 2021. AMOLED for smartphones shipments (units) decreased by 1%, while OLED TV panel shipments decreased by 9%. Some OLED segments grew in 2022 - AR/RV, automotive, monitors, and tablets.

Magnachip reports its Q4 2022 financial results, revenues are down due to supply shortages

OLED driver IC developer MagnaChip announced its financial results for Q4 2022, with revenues of $61 million, down 44.7% compared to Q4 2021, primarily due to severe 28nm wafer shortages.

In full-year 2022, the company reports revenues of $337.7 million, down 28.8% from 2021. The company does report, however, taht it signed a Tier-1 panel customer outside of Korea, and it qualified two new foundries to strengthen its supply chain. During the last quarter, MagnaChip successfully qualified two OLED projects with its two leading panel customers and expect to begin shipping at the end of this quarter.

Omdia details its AR and VR market forecast

Market analysts from Omdia say that the XR market (which they define as a combination of AR, VR and MR) will grow from 24 million units in 2023 to almost 90 million units in 2028, a CAGR of 67%. In terms of revenues, the market (XR displays) will reach $1.15 billion in 2023.

As you can see from the graph above, VR applications still take up most of the market, and Omdia does not seem to think AR technology will reach mass markets soon, maybe only in 2028.

DSCC sees fast growth ahead for automotive OLED displays

DSCC says that even though the display market is facing difficult market conditions, the automotive displays segment is expected to continue growing, and total shipments (both LCDs and OLEDs) are expected to exceed 200 million panels (an average of over 2 displays per car).

OLEDs are still a small percentage of the market (less than 0.5%, in fact), but OLEDs will gradually penetrate high-end applications for flagship models, as OLED makers adopt flexible and tandem-architecture technologies.
