Valve says that recent advances in LCDs bring it up to par with OLED displays for VR applications

US-based video game developer Valve has announced that it will license more of its VR technology to hardware makers that can develop VR HMDs based on its technology. In addition to the tracking and input tech that was already licensed before, HMD makers can now use Valve's optical system, calibration tools and a supporting software stack.

Currently pretty much all high-end HMD devices adopt OLED displays as these panels offer faster refresh rates compared to LCDs. But Valve says that recent LCD advancements combined with VR specific calibration now make LCD a viable technology choice for high end VR systems.

BOE to ship its first flexible OLEDs (5.5-inch) to Huawei

Last month we reported that BOE aims to start producing flexible OLEDs at its new 6-Gen B7 fab in Chengdu by the end of October 2017. A new report from Korea's ETNews sheds some more light about BOE's plans.

The annual capacity of the B7 line, when complete, will be about 90 million smartphone sized displays (45,000 monthly 6-Gen substrates). According to ETNews, BOE aims to produce 5.5" flexible OLEDs at first, and then add a 5.99" display in November. BOE's initial capacity will be very low - around 10,000 panels per month.

DSCC updates their OLED forecasts up, sees over $60 billion in revenues by 2022

Market research company DSCC has updated their OLED models, as the company sees more capital spending then before and a larger OLED market going forward.

The OLED market in general will grow 57% in 2017, according to DSCC, to reach $23.2 billion. Growth will continue to be strong with a 50% increase in 2018 (to $34.9 billion) and a CAGR of 27% from 2016 to 2022. In 2022 the market will surpass $60 billion.

Is LG the supplier of the Mercedes S-Class Coupe OLED taillights?

LG Electronics Germany posted a short press release in which it says it has launched its first OLED taillights product, adopted already by a major European car maker.

As you can see in the image above, this is the OLED Taillight used in the Mercedes 2018 S-Class Coupe and Convertible, unveiled last month. We do not know much details on this module, only that each one contains 33 individually controlled red OLED panels.

The Fraunhofer FEP demonstrate AR/VR dataglasses based on its SVGA bi-directional OLED microdisplays

The Fraunhofer FEP institute has successfully integrated its bi-directional OLED microdisplays into an VR / AR HMD (or dataglasses, as the Fraunhofer calls it) for 2D and 3D content.

The new HMD demonstrator uses the Fraunhofer's SVGA (800x600) displays and connects via a USB interface and an HDMI connection. The bi-directional displays can be used for eye tracking to support novel user interfaces.

Wisechip to produce in-cell touch PMOLED displays by the end of 2017

Taiwan-based PMOLED developer Wisechip announced plans to start mass producing In-Cell Touch PMOLED displays in Q4 2017. Wisechip says that its 1-inch ICT PMOLED will be cheaper by about $1 compared to current touch PMOLEDs, and will also be thinner and lighter.

An In-Cell Touch display has the touch layer embedded within the panel itself. There's no need to laminate a separate touch layer. Wisechip said that it developed an enhanced manufacturing process and new technologies that were required for the In-Cell layer addition.

Researchers develop glow-in-the-dark organic materials

Researchers from Kyushu University has demonstrated the world's first glow-in-the-dark material that is made completely from organic materials. These materials can absorb light and release it slowly - with light emission lasting up to an hour.

Current solutions, used in watch hands and emergency signs, are in-organic, and also include heavy metals. In-organic GITD materials are also opaque. The new materials are transparent and much more environmental friendly, and are more cost effective as they contain only carbon based materials.

Smartkem and a leading OLED maker in China to co-develop and commercialize OTFT-based LCDs and OLEDs

UK-based OTFT developer SmartKem announced that it has signed a letter of intent (LOI) towards a commercialization partnership with a leading OLED market in China. This partnership will enable the development and industrialization of OTFT LCDs and OLEDs on plastic substrates.

SmartKem says that this LOI is just the first step in a joint commitment by SmartKem and the OLED maker to develop LCD and AMOLED solutions and a full commercialization of an OTFT-based display production.
