OLED microdisplay developer MicroOLED raised 21 million Euro to accelerate its R&D and expand its production capacity

French OLED microdisplay maker MicroOLED announced that it has raised €21 million, led by Jolt Capital and with support from the French sovereign wealth fund Bpifrance via its Innovation Defense vehicle, alongside both historical investors, Cipio Partners and Ventech.

MicroOLED updates that it has been granted over 170 patents to date, through a close collaboration with neighbor CEA/Leti research centers. The company offers a line-up of compact products ranging from 0.2" to 0.6" in size, with high resolution and power as low as 1mW. MicroOLED will use to funds to accelerate its R&D, expand its production capabilities in Grenoble and grow its international sales teams.

More details emerge on the OLEDs used in Apple's Vision Pro VR headset

Apple announced its first VR headset, the Apple Vision Pro, and new details are starting to emerge on the displays adopted by Apple. According to Business Korea, the external display (used to simulate the user's eyes) are OLED displays, produced by LG Display.

We do not know the exact display specifications yet. Business Korea says that these displays cost around $30 to make. They also say that the Sony 4K microdisplays cost around $350 each (which makes sense), and so together the OLED displays in Apple's headset cost over $700 - or almost half the total production cost (estimated at around $1,500).

BOE starts shipping a 0.49" FHD OLED Microdisplay, we offer it at the OLED Marketplace

BOE has started producing a new OLED microdisplay - a 0.49" Full-HD panel that offers a relatively low brightness (up to 700 nits). This new panel joins other microdisplays by BOE, including 0.39" and 0.71" ones, all with the same FHD resolution.

eMagin demonstrates a 15,000 nits single-stack full-color OLED microdisplay

eMagin announced that it developed (and demonstrated) a 15,000 nits WUXGA (1920x1200) full-color OLED microdisplay, setting a new world record (surpassing eMagin's own 10,000 nits record from 2021).

This new microdisplay was deposited using the company's direct-patterning (dPd) technology, which means that there are no color filters. This is a single-stack device, and eMagin says that in the future it could use a tandem architecture to improve the performance further.

DSCC: OLED revenues to decline 7% in 2023, due to low demand for TV and smartphone panels

DSCC estimates that the OLED market will contract 7% in 2023, by revenues, to reach $38.7 billion. In terms of shipments, there will be a 1% decline from last year.

The two main OLED markets, smartphones and TVs, will both decline - OLED smartphone revenues will decline by 8% in 2023 (shipments will remain the same), while OLED TV panel revenues will drop 15% (12% by shipments).

Wisechip demonstrates a new miniature PMOLED-based near-eye display

Wisechip has unveiled a new miniature near-eye display module that is based on a small PMOLED display. The company says that this cost-effective solution offers high-contrast and low-power, and can be used for rapid development and applications that only require a simple information display.

The display module combines a 0.19" monochrome (white) PMOLED display, and a small optical system. Wisechip says that the whole module can work up to 20 hours powered by a 70mAh lithium battery.

DSCC says demand for smartphone and TV OLED displays will decline by 24% in the next quarter

DSCC says that OLED panel revenues were $12.6 billion in Q4 2022, down 3% from Q4 2021. Shipments declined by 7% compared to last year.

For the full year 2022, revenues reached $41.7 billion, a 1% decrease from 2021. AMOLED for smartphones shipments (units) decreased by 1%, while OLED TV panel shipments decreased by 9%. Some OLED segments grew in 2022 - AR/RV, automotive, monitors, and tablets.
