Will India become a global display hub?

As the global electronics industry pursues supply chain diversification away from China's overwhelming dominance, India has emerged as a focal point for next-generation manufacturing. There’s much government backing towards the semiconductor industry, but our focus, of course is on the display industry.

Can India establish itself as a significant display manufacturing hub? In this article we look into India’s display research capabilities, the country's chemical industry, supply chain challenges, the geopolitical imperative to reduce Western dependence on Chinese production, and current OLED, LCD and microLED projects and efforts. We conclude by trying to predict where India is header, and whether there is a real chance that in the future will see a meaningful display industry in India.

India's Research Infrastructure: Building from the Ground Up

We begin by looking at India's foundation in OLED  R&D. Towards the end of 2024, India inaugurated the AMOLED Research Centre (ARC) at IIT Madras. This national center of excellence, funded collaboratively by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), and Tata Sons, signals serious institutional commitment to building indigenous AMOLED capabilities

The ARC facility houses state-of-the-art cleanrooms with class 100 and class 1000 ratings, equipped with advanced fabrication and characterization tools. The researchers at the new center are behind a proprietary pixel patterning system, addressing the significant drawbacks of FMM processes.
