Smartkem and RiTDisplay sign an MoU to evaluate the OTFT process at a 2.5-Gen pilot AMOLED line transferred from ITRI

UK-based OTFT display backplane developer Smartkem announced a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU) with PMOLED maker RiTdisplay to evaluate the integration of Smartkem's OTFT process on RiTdisplay's 2.5-Gen pilot line for AMOLED production.

Smartkems announced a joint development agreement with RiTdisplay back in 2021, and in 2024 it signed a collaboration agreement with RiTDisplay for the production of OTFT-based AMOLED displays. This new MoU marks, according to Smartkem, a "significant progression in the collaboration work" between the two companies. Under the MoU, product prototyping capabilities will be transferred from ITRI's Gen2.5 line to a newly integrated Gen2.5 pilot line at RiTdisplay. The parties expect that the RiTdisplay line will be available for use in the second half of 2025.

Japan Display, Innolux and CarUX to bring eLEAP automotive displays to market

Japan Display announced a new strategic partnership with Taiwan-based Innolux and CarUX (Innolux's automotive display company) to bring eLEAP OLED displays to the automotive market.

The three companies did not disclose a lot of details, but it seems as in this partnership JDI will produce the eLEAP OLED displays while CarUX will market and sell these displays to its automotive customers. The first display that JDI will produce will be a 32" 1,000 nits 6460x880 (205 PPI) AMOLED display on an HMO (high-mobility oxide) backplane.

Researchers design a highly promising host material for blue TADF OLED devices

Researchers from National Taiwan University, together with colleagues from Yuan Ze University, National Dong Hwa University and Academia Sinica, have developed a very high efficiency blue TADF OLED device, by adopting a favorable horizontal oriented host material.

The researcher designed a new host material (4Ac26CzBz) that is made from acridan and carbazole moieties linked to a benzimidazole core. The host material exhibits a wide optical gap (Eg) and high triplet energy (T1) of 3.3 and 3.0 eV, respectively. The researchers used 4TCzBN as the blue-light TADF dopant, and report a remarkably high device external quantum efficiency of 35.8 % (59.8 cd/A and 62.8 lm/W) and a low turn-on voltage (<3 eV). The device features with significant suppression of the efficiency roll-off, maintaining a high efficiency of 29.7 % as luminance at 1000 cd/m2.

RitDisplay to produce OTFT-driven AMOLED displays by 2026 in collaboration with Smartkem

UK-based OTFT display backplane developer SmartKem announced that it signed a collaboration agreement with based PMOLED-maker RiTdisplay, for the production of OTFT-based AMOLED displays. SmartKem further said that Innovate UK and the Taiwanese Ministry of Economic Affairs will support this project with a grant of around $530,000.

Smartkem will provide its proprietary OTFT materials to RiTdisplay to integrate within its OLED displays. If successful, the project will create the world's first commercially ready AMOLED display made using organic transistors, which will outperform RiT's PMOLEDs with higher brightness, lower power consumption and higher resolutions. Both companies hope that the project will be completed in 2026.

Lian Li shows a prototype motorized gaming desk with a 30-inch transparent OLED display

Taiwan-based PC cases and accessory maker Lian Li is showing a new motorized gaming desk with a built-in  30-inch transparent OLED display.

The DK-07, currently in prototype stage, adopts LG Display's1366x768 transparent WOLED display. The desk is also a PC case. It's not clear what is the use case for the transparent display - the company is saying it can be a secondary display for your computer - and it is also showing a demo in which the transparent OLED displays ocean waves to create a nice effect. The display does not cover the entire desk area, as you can see in the image above.

MicroLEDs used to fix and replace an old OLED lighting installation in Taipei

Many years ago, The W Hotel in Taipei installed an OLED installation called You Fade to Light, designed by rAndom International creative studio and powered by Philips' OLED lighting panels. This beautiful piece consists of 2,000 modules, each lighting up as a response to people moving in front of it.

After several years these OLED panels started to fail (and fade, which is rather ironic given the installation's name), and now the hotel replaced the OLED panels with microLED-powered panels. It is said that the microLEDs achieved the same level of uniformity and light output of the OLEDs, maybe even surpassing them.

AUO may close down its AFPD OLED fab in Singapore as it focuses on microLED for next-gen wearable and automotive displays

AU Optronics has a 4.5-Gen AMOLED production line in Singapore, active since around 2013. The AFPD line is a small-scale operation, and AUO never managed to expand its capacity and compete with large AMOLED producers.

According to a report from Japan, AUO is now considering closing down the AFPD line, and converting it to microLED R&D production line. It could move it back to Taiwan, or retain Singapore as a hub for AUO in Southeast Asia. The company will make a final decision, it seems, in early 2024.
