Is Universal Display turning into an attractive value stock? Is it an interesting takeover target?

Over the past few months, several OLED-Info Pro readers have asked me to revisit Universal Display Corporation (UDC) from a fresh perspective: not as a classic high-growth OLED pure play, but as a potential value stock in a maturing industry ecosystem. This article is my attempt to answer that request directly, and to frame UDC as an established, cash-generative business.

It is important to state - this article is not an investment advice, and you should learn more before you make investment decisions. The author of this post may (and actually does) hold a position in some of the mentioned companies.

Universal Display is one of the OLED industry’s pioneers, a US-based IP and materials company whose phosphorescence emitter technologies and compounds sit at the heart of many of the world’s commercial OLED displays, from smartphones and TVs to IT and automotive panels. The company licenses its OLED patents and sells proprietary PHOLED materials to virtually all leading panel makers, generating high-margin, royalty-like revenue streams from a portfolio that now numbers thousands of issued and pending patents worldwide. We recently posted a spotlight article that discusses UDC's current status and future prospects.

The end of the OLED process monoculture - what will it mean for supply chain companies?

For most of OLED's commercial history, the industry operated as a near-monolith: virtually every panel maker deposited RGB organic materials through a Fine Metal Mask (FMM) on 6th-generation glass (or polyimide substrates with a glass carrier), while LG Display stood as the sole practitioner of its WRGB architecture for large-area OLED production.

In recent years, we have seen the emergence of new OLED architectures, processes and materials that signal the end of this technological uniformity. In this article, we examine the different technologies, speculate how the industry is changing and where it is headed - and understand the implications for supply chain companies.

Truly company spotlight: the story of a PMOLED, AMOLED and LCD maker

Truly International Holdings is a Hong-Kong headquartered display and electronics manufacturer with over four decades of history, a public company that trades in the HK stock exchange (HKEX: 00732). Truly mostly operates its display business through its subsidiary Truly Semiconductors.

The company is the world's 2nd largest small and medium display maker, operating LCD, PMOLED, and AMOLED fabs, serving automotive, smartphone, wearable, industrial, and medical markets.

Truly is one of the world's leading PMOLED maker, and it is also a small-scale AMOLED maker. In the mid-2010s, Truly had ambitious plans to expand its AMOLED production, but the company later effectively retreated from its large-scale AMOLED strategy, formally terminating its planned 27.9 billion Yuan 6th-Gen AMOLED JV in September 2024, and is instead doubling down on TFT-LCD and niche OLED applications.

Display Industry Funding Report: Companies, Investors, and Venture Capital Directory (2026)

The display industry is a large, but highly centric industry, making it quite unique. On one hand, the display industry generates around $170-200 billion in yearly sales, with around 25% of these sales generated from OLED panel sales (around $50 billion annually). On the other hand, the entire industry is comprised of a handful of very large display makers, concentrated in three countries: Korea, China and Taiwan.

In this article, we look at recent investment patterns, detail display related investment in the past 15 years, discuss the companies involved and the outcome of these investment (38 companies under discussion), offer a directory of over 103 VCs and CVCs active in the display industry, and end with a strategic discussion and tips for early stage companies and investors alike. We hope this will be highly useful for early stage companies that seek to raise more capital, as VCs with experience in this industry are far more likely to be interested in display related early stage ventures.

The display industry has experienced significant investment activity over the past decade, with total disclosed funding exceeding $4 billion across OLED, microLED, QD, and related display technologies. In addition, large tech giants such as Apple, Amazon, Meta, Google, and others, have invested billions in internal display-related R&D efforts. Many investors are cautious about investing in this area, as the low number of potential customers coupled with intensified competition, means that it is challenging to early stage companies to succeed. Industry veterans, however, know that while the stakes are high, so are the rewards - companies that manage to penetrate the supply chain of leading display makers are looking at high potential sales and their competitors will face similar challenges.

Will India become a global display hub?

As the global electronics industry pursues supply chain diversification away from China's overwhelming dominance, India has emerged as a focal point for next-generation manufacturing. There’s much government backing towards the semiconductor industry, but our focus, of course is on the display industry.

Can India establish itself as a significant display manufacturing hub? In this article we look into India’s display research capabilities, the country's chemical industry, supply chain challenges, the geopolitical imperative to reduce Western dependence on Chinese production, and current OLED, LCD and microLED projects and efforts. We conclude by trying to predict where India is header, and whether there is a real chance that in the future will see a meaningful display industry in India.
