MicroLED production comes to the US - STRATACACHE to establish its own fab by 2023

US-based signage solution provider STRATACACHE is building a MicroLED production line in the US. This is an interesting development in the display industry, which has been almost exclusively centered in Korea, Japan, Taiwan and China. MicroLED displays can be produced using some unique architectures and processes that enable production to be done in places where TFT-based production (of either LCD or OLED displays) has severe challenges.

The new factory will be used to produce a wide range of MicroLED displays, from tablet-sized panels to large-area signage displays, and will be able to produce both flexible and transparent panels. The yearly capacity of the E4 is expected to start at a 1 million square meters per year, and STRATACACHE will be able to supply both components level products and complete display products to third party customers (although it seems as if most production will be used for STRATACACHE's own projects).

Samsung to unveil new display technologies on January 6th 2021

Samsung announced a 'First Look 2021' event that will take place on January 6th 2021, during which the company will introduce its latest products, technologies and visions for the future of the display.

If we look at the teaser image, it seems as if Samsung is set to unveil all sorts of new displays sizes. It is likely that Samsung will unveil its 110" 4K MicroLED TV which it already announced earlier this month, and analysts expect also some mini-LED monitors. Hopefully the company will also showcase new OLED displays, maybe the QD-OLED monitors that it is reportedly developing.

DSCC: The high cost of MicroLED TV production will limit adoption in the next 6 years

DSCC says that the high costs of microLED production will limit the adoption of microLED TVs, which are highly expensive, and the technology will remain in the niche of ultra large displays. The market is set to grow from around $25 million in 2020 to $228 million by 2026.

Just for comparison, six years after being commercialization, in 2019 OLED TV revenues were estimated at $2.5 billion.

A discussion on MicroLED efficiency

MicroLED technology is regarded by many as a highly promising display technology, that could rival OLED in many applications in the future. We have been following microLEDs since 2018 via MicroLED-Info and are indeed excited by the progress and potential of this display technology.

One of the most talked-about advantages of microLED displays compared to OLEDs is the power efficiency. MicroLEDs are based on in-organic LEDs, which are inherently much more efficient than organic LEDs.

Sharp splits off display unit, to focus on microLED display technologies

According to reports from Japan, Sharp plans to split-off its display unit to a new company called Sharp Display Technology, or SDTC. According to the reports, SDTC will focus on MicroLED technology development.

SDTC will also, likely, take over Sharp's existing LCD factories (and OLED R&D lines). If this report is accurate, it is not clear what will be the future of Sharp's OLED projects.

Yole: the microdisplay market will grow to $4.2 billion by 2025

Yole Développement (Yole) says that the microdisplay market is set for impressive growth in the next few years, with the CAGR from 2020 to 2025 at 100%. Microdisplay module revenues will reach $4.2 billion in 2025, $1.8 billion of which will be for AR headsets.

This optimistic forecast has a warning though - it all depends whether next-generation display technologies will deliver on their promises - and whether actual use-cases will be found and commercialized.
