OLED displays use organic materials that emit light when electricity is applied. OLEDs enable emissive, bright, thin, flexible and efficient displays. OLEDs are set to replace LCDs in all display applications - from small displays to large TV sets.

Samsung's Super AMOLED Plus displays were an 2011-2012 upgrade to the company's Super AMOLED displays. Super AMOLED Plus display used a regular (RGB strip) sub pixel scheme as opposed to the Pentile Matrix used in 'regular' Super AMOLED displays. Only a handful of devices, shipped in 2011 and 2012 by Samsung and other companies did use Super AMOLED Plus displays. Samsung seems to have stopped using this brand and are now focused on Pentile scheme for all of its AMOLED panels.

Super AMOLED Plus devices

Super AMOLED Plus was announced in CES 2011, together with the first phone to sport these displays - the Infuse 4G. The display was a 4.5" one. Samsung's Galaxy S2 also had a Super AMOLED plus display (4.3" WVGA)

Samsung also adopted a Super AMOLED Plus display in their first OLED Tablet, the Galaxy Tab 7.7 (7.7" 1280x800 display).

Is Super AMOLED Plus dead?

The last device to actually sport a Super AMOLED Plus display was BLU's Vivo 4.3, a Dual-SIM smartphone introduced in 2012. Since then Samsung did not release any new device with a Super AMOLED Plus display - all of Samsung's newest phones and tablets use a 'regular' Super AMOLED display (with a Pentile Matrix).

Engadget reviews the Tab 7.7: the best 7" tablet, stunning display

Engadget posted a review of Samsung's Galaxy Tab 7.7. They say that it's the best 7" tablet - with a stunning display, a long lasting battery, good performance and thin size. The only problem? it's quite expensive. And they sure love the 1200x800 Super AMOLED Plus display - "We could tell you it's vibrant, stunning and breathtaking, but even that wouldn't quite do it justice. The contrast here is so deep, and the viewing angles so wide, that other tablets' screens look washed-out in comparison". Amazon.com is now offering an unlocked model for $749.

The Galaxy Tab 7.7 is the world's first tablet with an OLED display, a 7.7" Super AMOLED Plus panel, offering 1280x800 resolution. Other specs include Android v3.2, Dual-core 1.4 Ghz processor, HSPA+ radio, 16GB to 64GB internal storage and a microSD slot, Wi-Fi, GPS and two cameras (3MP and 2MP).

Toshiba shows their 7.7" OLED tablet

Toshiba held a press conference, one day before CES 2012 opens, and they unveiled the OLED tablet they already said they'll show. It seems that the tablet is a "reference design" - so it's not a finished product yet. And the OLED panel is 7.7".

According to the report, the OLED does not use PenTile. It's probably the same Super AMOLED Plus panel that Samsung uses in their own Galaxy 7.7 Tab. Hopefully we'll hear more from Toshiba soon - including when and where they plan to release this tablet.
