A spotlight on Everdisplay Optronics: China's first AMOLED producer navigating growth and challenges

Everdisplay Optronics (also known as Hehui Optoelectronics, or EDO) stands as a significant player in the global AMOLED display industry, distinguished as China's first AMOLED manufacturer to achieve mass production (back in 2014). Founded in 2012 and headquartered in Shanghai, the company has grown from a startup with ambitious goals to a publicly traded corporation supplying AMOLED displays for wearables, smartphones, laptops, tablets, VR devices, and automobiles.

In this article, we detail the company's history, current capabilities, production lines and products, and also look into its future, its technology roadmap, opportunities and challenges – and its prospects as an investment opportunity.

Origins and Early History

Everdisplay Optronics was established in October 2012 in Shanghai with the explicit aim of becoming China's first AMOLED producer. The company moved quickly from inception to production, beginning mass production of AMOLED displays towards the end of 2014 in a 4.5-Generation line with a monthly capacity of 20,000 substrates. This milestone marked a significant achievement for the Chinese display industry, as EDO indeed became the nation's first company to successfully commercialize AMOLED technology.

The company's first product was a 5-inch 720p (293 PPI) AMOLED display, which was shipped to Chinese mobile phone makers. By early 2015, Everdisplay was producing 600,000 panels per month and had begun expanding its roadmap to include 5.5-inch and 6-inch displays for mobile devices, along with a 1.4-inch 400x400 circular AMOLED for the wearable market.
