Samsung found to infringe on Pictiva Display's OLED patents, to pay $191 million in damages

A jury in the Texas Federal Court found Samsung Electronics to be guilty in its patent fight with Pictiva Displays. Samsung was ordered to pay $191.4 million in damages, for infringing upon two US OLED patents (US8,314,547 and US11,828,425).

Samsung says that it will appeal the verdict, and it is also pursuing a separate case with an aim to invalidate the patents in question. The original lawsuit by Pictiva Displays was filed in 2023.

Over the years we have seen several OLED legal battles that involves Samsung (and many other OLED developers, Samsung is not alone in this).

A fellow Irish company, Solas OLED has filed several patents lawsuits against Samsung. In 2021,  Samsung Display and Samsung Electronics were found to willfully infringing two fundamental OLED patents owned by Solas, and Solas was awarded with $62.7 million in damages. That legal battle seems to be still ongoing, Samsung won some challenges and its' not clear what the end result will be. Solas also filed a lawsuit against SDC and Nintendo later in 2021. In 2025, BOE has filed a suit against Samsung that relates to its under-the-OLED camera patents.
