Samsung Display starts to mass produce OLED microdisplays, to be 2nd supplier for the Galaxy XR

Last month Samsung Electronics launched the Galaxy XR AI VR headset, with dual 1.3" 4K 90Hz OLED microdisplays, produced by Sony. According to a report from Korea, Samsung Display has finally started to produce similar OLED microdisplays, and Samsung Electronics will add SDC as its second microdisplay supplier for the Galaxy XR.

It is reported that Samsung Electronics tested SDC's microdisplays rigorously and it approved the displays - and already signed a first order. It is reported that Samsung is also hoping to supply some of its displays to Apple as well. According to reports last year, Microsoft has signed up Samsung Display for future OLED microdisplay supply.

Samsung Display started pilot production began in 2024, and its original plan was to achieve full mass production will be achieved in 2026. It is likely that the current production is not full capacity - in any case it is likely that Samsung Electronics will not order a large number of displays from SDC. If Apple's Vision Pro tells us anything, is that demand for high-cost VR headsets is not large (the Galaxy XR is a lot less expensive than the Visiono Pro, but it is still a very expensive device).

These first-generation SDC microdisplays will utilize white OLEDs with color filters. In 2022 Samsung acquired US-based eMagin to accelerate its development and to take hold of eMagin's advanced direct-emission microdisplay process, which will likely be a key part of Samsung's technology roadmap.
