Samsung Display has reportedly started to produce AMOLED display samples at its 8.6-Gen IT production line in Asan. The company has verified mass production at the fab, and has shipped the samples to potential customers (laptop makers).
Samsung Display's original plan was to start full mass production in Q3 2026, or even a few weeks before that. It seems as if the company is progressing well, and it may aim to accelerate its production plan.
SDC's first customer for the displays produced at the 8.6-Gen line is Apple, that has signed an exclusive supply agreement with Samsung Display to produce touch AMOLED displays for its upcoming 2026 MacBook Pro laptops (both 14-inch and 16-inch models).
There are four 8.6-Gen lines coming up, from Samsung, BOE, Visionox and TCL CSOT, at various stages of maturity, which we detail below. Both Samsung and BOE aim to be the world's first to initiate mass production of AMOLEDs on a 8.6-Gen line - but eventually who will be first won't matter much, but the display quality, production price, and yields will be more crucial for long-term success.
