Samsung Display announced that together with Intel, it has jointly developed a new technology that can reduce the power consumption by up to 17% in HDR mode and up to 22% in normal mode on laptop AMOLED displays.
The new technology, branded as SmartPower HDR, dynamically adjusts the OLED voltage based on the characteristics of the displayed content. This enables lower average driving voltage and so reduces the power consumption of the OLED display.
Samsung explains that the new technology differentiates between normal modes (used for example for web browsing or document editing), and HDR modes used in movies or games. The normal modes can operate with a lower voltage levels compared to HDR modes that need higher brightness and so higher voltages
