Researchers from POSTECH developed new high-performance MLA devices utilizing low-cost materials and processes

Researchers from Korea's POSTECH institute have developed a new technology that enhances the performance of metalens arrays (MLA) that both improve the performance, and also lowers the production cost.

The researchers say that the main challenge with current MLA solutions is achieving high chromatic aberration performance using a low-refractive-index materials. To solve this problem, the researcher propose adding a new level of control, the height of the nano-pillars (or meta-atoms) that form the metalens.

The researchers did this in two stages. First, they utilized a highly-precise 3D printing technology called two-photon lithography, and used AI to select and design the nano-pillars, starting with a database of various pre-made nanopillar designs. The AI system managed to create MLA devices for full-color OLED emitters, utilizing only relatively inexpensive low-refractive-index materials. In experiments, the design was found to offer excellent performance.
