A team of researchers from Kyoto University, Kyushu University and Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School have designed a new novel class of deep-blue phosphorescence OLED emitters, achieving remarkable performance.
The researchers design, and then synthesized a class of asymmetric [3+2+1] coordinated iridium(III) complexes incorporating strongly electron-withdrawing trifluoromethyl and fluorine modified N-heterocyclic carbene ligands. They explain that this material was designed utilizing strategic ligand engineering, which enables precise modulation of excited-state characteristics, distinctly favoring charge-transfer or locally excited states for emission tuning.
The CF3-substituted complexes exhibit pronounced charge-transfer character with significantly enhanced radiative decay rates, while the F-substituted complexes feature predominantly localized excitation. There were several complexes that were produced, and three of them exhibited outstanding performance.
