Last week, LG Display announced plans to invest $925 million to develop "advanced OLED technologies", saying that the funds will be invested over a period of 2 years (until June 30, 2027). The company did not share more information, but recent reports from Korea break down the project in more details.
So first of all, there are reports that LG Display will mostly focus on small and medium sized displays, for smartphones and IT devices. LG will also upgrade its WOLED production technology, for TV panels. Most of the funds will go into enabling LG to produce a higher percentage of high-end panels out of its OLED production lines.
According to UBI Research, about $515 million will be invested in Paju, to upgrade LG Display's production line. This was actually reported a few weeks ago. The funds will be used to upgrade LG's LTPO technology to LTPO 3.0 over larger portions of its production line, implement COE (Color on Encapsulation) technology (polarizer-free OLEDs), enhance LG's 2-stack tandem AMOLED structure - and also add new chambers capable of performing 4-stack WOLED production to increase capacity of its latest WOLED generation.
The rest of the investment (about $412 million) will be invested at LG Display's Vietnam-based OLED module factory, to improve module process efficiency and automation capabilities.
