Omdia sees growth ahead for AR and VR displays, with AR growing at a faster rate

Omdia releases their latest forecast for the AR and VR markets, saying that by 2030, AR shipments will reach 21 million units, surpassing VR shipments (19 million units). The shift in consumer interest in VR headsets to lightweight AR headsets will continue into 2032 as well, where the market share of AR displays will reach 57% (up from 28% in 2024).

Omdia says that the AR/VR headset market continues to face a fundamental trade-off between performance, device weight, and battery life. These three performance points cannot be fully optimized fully, but have to be balanced for different applications.

As VR headset makers put more emphasis on a compact and comfortable device design, they will also increasingly use OLED microdisplays instead of LCD and AMOLED displays.
