Omdia has released their projections for the AR and VR markets, with some very interesting data. First of all, the company releases its estimates for the new devices that Apple, Meta, XREAL and Rayneo will release in 2026, 2027 and 2028:
All of these new devices, according to Omdia, will be based on OLED microdisplays, as these displays offer superb image quality, high power efficiency, and a very small footprint. While microLEDs have a big potential due to their much higher brightness (and efficiency), the technology is not ready for mass production yet.
Omdia is specifically optimistic about Meta's upcoming headsets. The company will release a lightweight MR product, something similar to the Apple Vision Pro, with an external battery, but with much smaller displays (0.91" microdisplays, while Apple is using 1.43" microdisplays). This will enable Meta to reduce the cost and also the weight of the headset. Omdia believes there will be much demand for this product, and says that Meta is in talks with both BOE and Seeya to supply the OLED panels (this was already reported in December 2025).
The demand for this Meta headset, combined with the other headsets, will increase the shipments of OLED microdisplays by 58% in 2026, to 20.2 million units, while revenues will grow over 200% to reach $1.2 billion. The fast growth will continue and revenues will reach almost $3 billion by 2028.
