According to reports from Korea, LG Display developed a new WOLED display architecture, based on only two stacked layers. LG says that these panels will be cheaper to produce, but still maintaining high image quality, comparable to its 3-stack WOLEDs.
LGD says that the new panels achieve comparable performance under both 6,500-kelvin and 10,000-kelvin color temperature conditions. The new architecture offers a wider color gamut than the existing three-stack design while reducing panel operating voltage by more than 4 volts. LG hopes that the lower cost and very high performance will enable it to expand its WOLED market share in monitors, targeting more-affordable monitor segments.
LG's current WOLED panels are based on either 3-stacks or 4-stacks (in its latest 4th-generation highest-performance architecture). When the company first introduced its WOLED panels, back in 2013, it used a 2-stack structure. But OLED materials and technologies evolved much since then, and today it seems as if it can offer very high performance using only 2 stacks.
