LG Display has finally officially announced that it has developed a new maskless OLED production process, branded as FLiPP, or FMM-Less innovative Pixel Patterning. LG says that its FLiPP OLEDs will offer greater flexibility in mass production as well as high brightness, long lifetime and increased power efficiency.
LGD says that FLiPP OLED panels, compared to OLEDs produced with an FMM process under identical conditions, offer a 1.6X increase in brightness, a 2.4X increase in lifetime, and a 13% decrease in power consumption. This is all thanks to the fact the FLiPP improves the aperture ratio by 55%.
It is understood that the plan LG announced a few months ago, to invest 3 trillion Won (around $2.1 billion USD) in upgrading its OLED laptop and tablet panel production, will go towards its FLiPP 8.5-Gen fab it is set to build.
