A couple of months ago we posted an article, discussing India's goal of becoming a global display producer, speculating on whether the country will bet on LCD, OLED or microLED technology.
Today we hear that the country has approved its first display project, Crystal Matrix's $336 million miniLED/microLED project.
This is a very interesting development, that will be important to watch for display professionals, as it could signal not only India's future display strategy, but may show that decision makers are not afraid to after next-generation display technologies. As Japan Display is also considering establishing a $13 billion display fab in the US, it will be very interesting to see whether they will also attempt to leapfrog into next-generation microLED technology, or go with the 'safe-bet' LCD or, the most reasonable choice, propose an OLED hub.
