Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems IPMS have developed a monochrome red OLED microdisplay that achieves an ultra-high brightness (35,000 nits) while still being highly efficient.

The microdisplay (that offers a resolution of 320x240), like all of the Fraunhofer IPMS' microdisplays, is based on standard CMOS semiconductor processes, with a silicon backplane. The researchers say that their ultra-low-power technology means that only the necessary pixels are changed for the next image instead of updating the entire image, which improves the efficiency dramatically. saves a tremendous amount of power.
The researchers further say that this newly developed OLED stack can be transferred to various backplane formats, and they are open to industry collaborations.
