China-based TV vendor Skyworth will release a 55-inch OLED TV that will go on sale during the May 1 holiday period in China.

The company made announcements in late 2013 that it would develop OLED TV technology, but industry sources said Skyworth will officially release the new TV into the China market in late April or early May 2014 in preparation for the nation's May 1 holiday period, which typically draws increased sales for electronic devices.

The 55-inch unit will use OLED panel technology from LG Display and will reportedly be for sale at CNY$30,000 (US$4,800) – half the price offered by Korea-based TV vendors-upon initial launch.

Market observers said such efforts from Skyworth show that it is aggressive about taking a lead role in selling OLED technology in China. However, the observers said Ultra HD TVs in China are priced about one-third of the CNY$30,000 price tag, so shipments of OLED TVs are expected to be limited.

The sources also revealed Skyworth has plans to release a 65-inch OLED TV in China during the nation's October 1 holiday period in 2014 that will use W-OLED technology from LG as well.

OLED TVs remain high in price due to material and production costs, but are expected to continue decreasing over the next few years, the observers noted.

Global shipments of OLED TVs are expected to be around 100,000 units in 2014, the observers estimated.
