Bloomberg: Apple is developing a 18-inch foldable tablet, but will take years to launch, if ever

Bloomberg is claiming that Apple is developing a large foldable iPad, one that features a 18-inch display when fully open. While this is an exciting project, Bloomberg's report says that there are many technical challenges, and the plan is to release it in 2029 - and the project will likely to be cancelled soon.

There are also other reports that Apple is developing a smaller folding tablet, that may replace the iPad mini. But there are not many details there, yet.

Apple is gearing up to introduce its first foldable iPhone soon, and has chosen Samsung Display to be its exclusive supplier of foldable OLEDs,. Apple  signed a 11 million unit order with SDC towards the end of 2025. According to reports from China, Apple is paying around $250 per foldable display, more than the price of the foldable OLEDs currently used by Samsung Electronics.  Samsung Display is now looking to expand its foldable OLED production capacity.

Apple is (slowly) moving away from LCDs to OLEDs in all of its devices, and in 2026 the company plans to introduce both the foldable iPhone, and OLED iPad Mini devices, and its first OLED laptop (MacBook Pro). In the next few years it will also release an OLED iPad Air (2027 or 2028), and OLED MacBook Air laptops (2028).
