Motorola delays the foldable Razr 2019 launch due to high demand

Motorola says that due to unexpected high demand, it is delaying the launch of its $1,500 foldable OLED phone, the Razr 2019. The company did not announce a new launch date (previously it was December 26th) but says that the company "does not anticipate a significant shift from our original availability timeline".

Motorola says that "Since its announcement in November, the new motorola razr has received unparalleled excitement and interest from consumers. Demand has been high, and as a result, has quickly outgrown supply predictions".

Meyer Burger sells its PixDro inkjet printing unit to Suss MicroTec

Meyer Burger announced that it is selling its PixDro inkjet printing business to Germany-based Suss MicroTec SE. The agreed price is $5 million, and the transaction is expected to be completed by the end of February 2020. Meyer Burger reveals that PixDro currently has annual sales of around $8 million. This transaction continues Meyer burger's strategic focus on its solar (PV) business.

PixDro develops and manufactures inkjet printing equipment for for the electronics and semiconductor industries. PixDro started out as a startup in Isarel, and was later integrated into the Netherlands-based OTB-Group, which was later renamed Roth & Rau AG, which was then acquired by Meyer Burger. The company continues its journey and will now be part of Suss MicroTec.

IHS: rigid AMOLED displays increase their lead in the smartwatch display market

IHS Markit says that rigid AMOLED is the leading smartwatch display technology, with a market share of 36% (in Q4 2019) - up from a market share of only 14% in the beginning of 2019. Rigid AMOLEDs enjoy the fastest growth of all display technologies.

All OLED displays together (PMOLED, AMOLED and flexible OLEDs) take up a market share of 69%. The market share of PMOLED displays shrunk from 51% in 2018 to 19% in 2019 as rigid AMOLEDs starts to be adopted where PMOLED displays once were. Reports from Korea suggests LG is the producer of Cadillac's 38-inch curved OLEDs

A few days ago we reported that Cadillac announced that its 2021 Escalade, to be unveiled on February 2020, will sport a 38-inch curved OLED display. A new report from Korea's Hankyung says that the producer of this display is LG Display.

Hankyung says that LG is pushing its automotive OLED displays, and will also supply OLED displays to Mercedes-Benz's 2020 E-Class car. LG is not alone as many display makers are developing and producing automotive OLED displays and aiming to take a part of this important market. Visionox to supply Huami with a 2.07" highly curved AMOLED display

Visionox announced that it is supplying the highly-curved 2.07" 326 PPI 430 nits AMOLED display for Huami's next-generation Amazfit X smartwatch, which will be released in Q1 2020.

Huami, which is a subsidiary of Xiaomi, is enjoying great success with its wearable devices. In 2018 it has shipped 27.5 million smartwatches - surpassing even Apple. This could be an excellent design win for Visionox.

IHS Markit - the Automotive OLED market is set to grow from $20 million in 2019 to over $4.5 billion in 2026

IHS Markit says that the automotive OLED market is set for fast growth - from around $20 million in 2019 (almost all from PMOLED displays) to over $360 million in 2020 and almost $4.5 billion in 2026.

It seems as if IHS believes that AMOLED displays will finally penetrate the automotive market in 2020. Currently the only company that adopted AMOLEDs in its automobiles is Audi, and this is only in premium cars and niche applications.

RiTDisplay sees lower PMOLED sales, shifts focus to micro LED displays

Taiwan-based PMOLED display maker RiTDisplay's CEO says that the company's PMOLED sales has been affected by e-cigarette bans in the US, and the company is now shifting its focus to develop micro LED displays (and also mini-LED ones). RiTDisplay's revenues in 2019 to date, $47.1 million USD, decreased 32.4% compared to last year.

In May 2019 RiTDisplay announced a strategic partnership and share swap with Taiwan-based MicroLED developer PlayNitride. As part of the partnership, RiTDisplay gained access to PlayNitride's technology and is able to produce and sell micro-LED panel based on this technology and IP.

eMagin announces two significant orders for OLED microdisplays

OLED microdisplay maker eMagin reported two significant orders for its OLED microdisplays - both from the defense sector.

The first order is a follow-on order for $4.3 million in connection with the U.S. Army’s Enhanced Night Vision Goggle Binocular (ENVG-B) program - which is expected to result in more orders as this is a multi-year program. The second order if from a major defense contractor (eMagin did not detail further) - and worth $5.6 million.

Guangzhou's government to support its local display industry with large subsidies

The government of the Guangzhou province in China announced that it aims to help its local display industry and have allocated large funds - up to 2 billion RMB (around $285 million USD) in subsidies per company. The goal is to help companies invest in production of emerging display technologies - including OLEDs, Micro-LEDs, QD-LEDs, 3D displays, e-paper displays, graphene enhanced display technologies and more.
