Henkel leads the new financing round of OLED encapsulation developer Vitriflex

In 2014, Henkel signed a joint-development agreement with Vitriflex, a US start-up that has developed a patented cost-efficient process for high-volume flexible encapsulation film production. Today Henkel announced that it lead a new financing round in Vitriflex, "reaffirming Henkel's coommitment to next-gen display technologies".

Henkel says that since 2014 the company made "profound progress" toward an integrated barrier film product that delivers good adhesion to multiple substrates. This latest round will enable Vitriflex to continue development and "move towards" high volume manufacturing capability. In fact, Vitriflex hopes to have a commercial product ready to ship by the end of 2015.

Samsung Q2 earnings lower then expected, probably due to weak GS6 sales

Up until now analysts estimated that Samsung's GS6 and GS6 Edge have been very successful, but today Samsung announced that Q2 earnings will be lower than expected - and this was probably due to lower than expected smartphone shipments.

Samsung already said that they could not keep up with the demand to the GS6 Edge - as more people wanted the curved-OLED variant over the regularly shaped GS6. It seems that this lead to lower than expected GS6 sales. Samsung increased their flexible OLED capacity and will now be able to meet demand - but it may be too late financially as Apple is set to release a new iPhone soon and Samsung may have "missed the window" on the GS6.

DisplaySearch: 35,200 OLED TVs were sold in Q1 2015, 90% by LG Electronics

DisplaySearch estimates that 35,200 OLED TVs were sold, globally, in the first quarter of 2015. This is a seven-fold increase from Q1 2014 (4,600 units). DisplaySearch says that the OLED TV market will grow from around 400,000 in 2015 to 7 million in 2019.

The current 35,200 estimate is actually lower than DisplaySearch's previous estimate of over 53,000 OLED TVs in the quarter. LG themselves aim to produce around 600,000 OLED TVs in 2015.

LG Display to expand flexible OLED production in a $800 million investment

LG Display currently produces plastic-based OLEDs in its Gen-4.5 fab, with a monthly capacity of 14,000 substrates (more than double its capacity in the beginning of 2014). In the past, we heard reports that LGD is building a Gen-6 line (15,000 monthly substrates), but LGD themselves said that plans for expansion are still under review.

According to a new report in Korea, LG Display made the decision to invest 900 billion Won ($802 million USD) in a new production line for flexible OLEDs. The new fab will produce small/medium sized displays - used for mobile phone and wearable applications. LGD officially declined to comment on this, though.

DisplayMate tests sapphire vs glass in Apple's Watch

A couple of months ago DispalyMate's Raymond Soneira posted a technical review of Apple's Watch Flexible OLED display. The display was found out to be excellent, and Raymond said that "there is absolutely no question that for smart watches, OLED is the only way to go for a great display".

Apple watch in Ambient light (Sapphire vs Glass)

The Watch in DisplayMate's edition used a Sapphire cover, while the cheaper Watch editions use strengthened glass (same one used in the iPhones and iPads). DisplayMate said that sapphire's advantage is that it's virtually scratch-proof, but it also reflects about twice as much ambient light as glass. In a new post, DisplayMate compares two Watch editions (glass vs. sapphire). As you can see above, the different under ambient light is quite dramatic.

Will Apple add SDC as a second flexible OLED supplier for the next-gen Watch?

The first-generation Apple Watch uses a flexible OLED display, exclusively produced by LG Display. New reports say that Apple signed up Samsung Display to be the second flexible OLED supplier for the next-generation Watch.

This is actually quite funny - even before the official launch of the Watch in March 2015, we heard the same report. Later on it was said that Apple decided to make LGD the exclusive flexible OLED display supplier for the Watch 2. And now we're back to the first report with SDC as a supplier.
