AUO shows a 32" Oxide-TFT based OLED TV prototype, 4" flexible AMOLED panel

AUO announced it will show several OLED prototypes at the FPD International 2011 exhibition later this week. The company will show a new 32" Full-HD OLED TV prototype. This TV uses a Metal Oxide TFT as backplane and is only 3mm thick. AUO says that the TV has a quick response time and high contrast ratio. Hopefully the company will unveil the specifications and commercialization plans during the conference.

AUO will also show a 4" Flexible AMOLED panel (which is based on Low Temperature Processed Metal Oxide TFT as backplane driver). This panel is only 0.3mm thick.

Samsung - we sold over 30 million Galaxy S and SII phones

Samsung announced that it has sold over 30 million Galaxy S and Galaxy S II phones worldwide. It was just a month ago that Samsung announced it has sold over 10 million SII phones, so we can assume that Galaxy S sales have reached almost 20 million units (and this phone is still on sale).

The Galaxy-S has a 1 Ghz processor and a large 4" Super-AMOLED display, while the Galaxy S II has a 4.3" WVGA Super AMOLED plus display, 1.2Ghz dual-core processor, NFC, Bluetooth 3 and HSPA+. It's only 8.49mm thick at its thinnest point.

OSD introduces a new 50,000 hours 1.3" PMOLED module

OSD announced a new PMOLED module, the OSD2864P1097-10. It's a monochrome white 128x64 1.3" panel that features 50,000 hours lifetime, 10,000:1 contrast ratio and 178 degree viewing angles. It is available in two version - with and without an anti-glare polarizer (at no extra cost). The OSD12864P1097-10 is paired with an SSD1306 IC offering I2C, 3 wire SPI, 4 wire SPI, 8-bit68xx Parallel and 8-bit 80XX Parallel settings.

Sony - the PlayStation Vita will go on sale February 22, 2012 in North America and Europe

Sony announced that the PSP Vita will ship in North America and Europe on February 22nd, 2012. The Vita will ship in Japan on December 17th 2011. Amazon.com also updated their Vita page with the correct release date. The will cost $249 for the Wi-Fi version and $299 for the 3G one).

The Vita features a 5" touch AMOLED display (960x544), a quad-core ARM Cortex A9 processor and a quad-core PowerVR (SGX543MP4+) GPU (Sony says that it is as powerful as a PS3), Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth and 3G (AT&T, optional). Gaming controls include dual analog sticks, motion controls and a multi-touch pad on the rear side.

Two OLED patents up for sale on Live IP Auction

ICAP Patent Brokerage is organizing a Live IP Auction on November 16 and 17, and there will be two OLED patents on sale. The first patent is titled "Organic Light Emitting Devices (OLED) Materials", authored by Bhalchandra M. Karandikar (US patent #6,689,494). The patents offers using rigidized cyanines as emissive materials in an OLED assembly.

The second patent is titled "Touch Sensitive Organic Light Emitting Diode" and is authored by Lee Young Jong. This is a Korean patent (#KR 1007435450000) and it also includes a US patent application. This patent describes a touch sensing OLED.

Toshiba unveils a 6" 498ppi LCD prototype

Toshiba has developed a new 6.1" LTPS LCD panel that features 2560x1600 resolution - that's 498 ppi. The panel also features 1,000:1 contrast ratio, 16.7 million colors and 176-degrees viewing angles.

Toshiba wouldn't say whether they have plans to commercialize this display...

WAC Lighting's SOL OLED chandelier finally shipping - for $9,995

WAC Lighting announced their SOL OLED chandelier back in May 2010, and finally that lamp is shipping. The company used that period to refine the product and upgrade the Orbeos OLED panels (to the new models which are brighter and sport better CRI).

The SOL costs $9,995, and is available through over a dozen lighting shops in the US and Canada. The chandelier is crafted of aluminum and finished in Black Nickel. It is 18.5 inches in diameter and only 2.2 inches tall. The overall height of the chandelier, with supporting metal rod, is 12.25 40 inches tall.
