Apple released the Vision Pro VR headset back in 2023, with dual Sony 4K OLED microdisplays. The $3,500 headset showcased new exciting technologies, but failed to attract real consumer attention. As is expected, Apple started designing the successor to the Vision Pro, sometimes referred to as the Vision Pro 2 or the Vision Pro Gen 2.
Several sources suggested that Apple's target is to announce and release its 2nd Gen VR headset towards the end of 2025. In the last few weeks, several interesting - and conflicting - rumors started to surface. In this post we will take a look at these rumors, and speculate how these will effect the OLED industry.
So first of all, Apple's original Vision Pro uses two 4K (or 3660x3200, in fact - 3,380 PPI, or a 7.5 micron pixel pitch) OLED microdisplays, produced by Sony. The displays offer up to 100Hz refresh rate, and a color gamut of 92% DCI-P3. Sony produces high quality microdisplays, and reports suggested Apple pays around $350 per microdisplay.
