BASF and OSRAM Develop New Highly Efficient White OLEDs

BASF and Osram Opto Semiconductors have developed a highly efficient white OLEDs. The efficiency is over 60 lumens per watt, and meet the international Energy Star SSL standard for color requirements.

Applied Materials is into OLED manufacturing equipment

Applied Materials, which made its name by designing equipment for semiconductor makers and television manufacturers, is bulking up to become the chief equipment maker for the greentech industry.

The company is building up an internal group to sell equipment to manufacturers of energy storage devices, such as batteries and fuel cells, say sources close to the company.

Applied also wants to sell equipment to manufacturers of OLEDS. The company is one of the charter members of the European OPAL 2008, which aims to develop cheap OLED lights. Other members include Aixtron, Osram, Philips and BASF. It also has an investment in Plextronics.

Ingo Maurer, who designed the beautiful OLED lamp using OSRAM OLED panels, says he hopes the first two lamps will be deliveres this month.

In total, they will only make 25 of them, which are probably very expensive and not very practical (reportedly the light is rather dim, and the panels have only 2,000 hours half-light lifetime.

Osram is giving some more information about their OLED "lamp" (designed by Ingo Maurer, shown to the right) at CEATEC.

The panels have a lifetime of 5,000 hours (up from 2,000), and OSRAM says that these lamps will be available by 2011 or 2012. The efficiency is 46 lm/W (1000 cd/m2).

Ingo Mauer is now showing another beautiful white-light project, using OSRAM's white OLED panels.

The new "object" is called Flying Future, and is using a bended metal mesh, with over 100 panels attached to it. The whole thing looks like a giant wave. The panels are still not 'commercial', but in a few years it's possible that OLEDs will be ready for white-light. Anyway OLEDs allow for exciting new designs...

OLED100.eu - a new EU OLED white light project to follow-up on OLLA, gets 30M$ funding

The companies behind the OLLA project (Philips, OSRAM, Siemens, Novaled and Franhofer IPMS) agreed to fund another OLED lighting project - the OLED100.eu, a follow-up project.

The new project will start on September 2008, for 3 years. The budget is 30$, 20M$ out of which will come from the EU.

The main objectives of OLED100.eu -

100 lumens per watt power efficiency
100,000+ lifetime hours
Area of 1 meter by 1 meter
Cost of 100 euro per square meter or lower

CombOLED - A New EU Project For Cost Effective OLED Mass Production

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors is spearheading the effort to develop cost-effective volume production methods for organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) under the CombOLED project, a European funded research and development project that was conceived to combine new device structures, advantageous manufacturing approaches and less complex materials with the aim to achieve cost effective OLED lighting solutions.

In April 2008, we had the chance of interviewing Mary Kilitziraki, Fast2Light's project manager. Fast2Light is an integrated (9 companies, 3 research institutes and 2 universities) R&D project that aims to research and develop light emitting foils based on OLED tech.
