New chinese AMOLED research and production center

A new AMOLED display center is announced in Shanghai - SVEDF. This is a joint venture of SVA Electron company and Shanghai University.

The center aim is to build an AMOLED R&D and trial production line. They hope to raise about 250M$ to build a real production line, capable or making 1.8" to 7" AMOLEDs by 2010. By 2015 they plan to make even larger displays.

The center will be working with several scientific and technological projects based in China, from companies and government sources.

Sony - working only on OLED TVs, not on small OLED displays

Sony says that they are 'investing heavily' in OLEDs - but only on OLED TVs. They are not interested in making smaller sized OLED displays. They say OLEDs have great performance, and are energy saving, too.

Dresden's COMEDD is open - will Germany become an OLED production center?

The new Center for Organic Materials and Electronic Devices Dresden (COMEDD) facility is now open in Dresden, Germany. COMEDD is owned and operated by the Fraunhofer IPMS. It will be used to make OLED displays and lighting products, and also organic Solar cells.

The hope is that COMEDD will become a production center for OLEDs - this is not just for research or pilot lines.

COMEDD will focus on OLED displays on glass, Microdisplays on silicon (partership with MED) and flexible displays on plastic. They will also make OLED lighting on glass or flexible substrates.

There are also some news from Fraunhofer IPMS on their OLED research. They are working on OLED pico-projector and an 3D displays with an OLED backlight.

PolyPhotonix is building a new OLED light production line

PolPhotonix, a UK based OLED-lighting startup is building its first production line. They want to make 3M efficient OLED panels with high yields. They say their main markets are automotive and architectual lighting. In fact they got their first funding through a project called MENDIP, in which Sanko Gosei (a Japanese car interior maker) is another partner.

The production line will make the OLEDs on 200x200m glass substrates, at least initially. Later perhaps they will use flexible plastic substrates.

PolPhotonix is using CDT's P-OLED IP, and are seeking 4.5M$ in investment.

Zhongxian Tech to build China's first AMOLED plant with 65M$ investment

Zhongxian Tech is building China's first AMOLED plant. They will invest 65M$, and hope to begin production in September 2009.

Their plan is to make 50M 2" displays in a year, and generate around 7 billion US$. Last month we heard that Visionox and Tsinghua University began manufacturing on China's first OLED (PMOLED) production line in Kunshan, Jiangsu province, with a plan to make 12 million small panels annually.

RiTdisplay got orders for 35 million PMOLEDs

Taiwanese market research institute Topology Research Institute (TRI) says that RiTdisplay got orders for 35 million PMOLED, 30 million of which shall be delivered this year. This makes RiTdisplay the largest PMOLED maker. RiTdisplay's PMOLEDs are up to 1.98" currently, although they are working on 3.1" ones.

TDK shows 3" PMOLED, using Dialog's SmartXtend driver

TDK is showing a W-QVGA 3" PMOLED, using Dialog's SmartXtend driver, saying production may begin in the second half of 2009.

We covered Dialog's SmartXtend in February, and it's good to see TDK's implementation. The SmartXtend can reduce peak current through each diode by up to 30 percent compared to regular PMOLEDs, and it allows for greated resolution and larger displays than normal PMOLEDs, while being cheaper to make than AMOLEDs.

Samsung Electronics show their 14" and 31" AMOLED TV at GITEX

Samsung Electronics are showing the 14.1" and 31" AMOLED TV this week at GITEX technolgy week 2008 (Dubai). Samsung is boasting that these are not prototypes, but rather "finished TV products".

The finished products weigh forty percent less than other LCD TVs of the same size while boasting a contrast ratio of 1 million to one, color gamut of 107% and brightness of 550 cd/m2. Samsung will begin commercial production of mid and large sized OLED TVs around 2010.

After hearing that LG is "cautious" about OLED TVs, it's good to see Samsung is still committed.

OSD releases new 4.3 WVGA AMOLED panel

OSD announces the release of its new OSD0430WQLC-T a 4.3 inch diagonal WVGA Active Matrix Organic LED (AMOLED) module. This new full color module supports up to 16 million colors with a 24-bit parallel RGB interface. It also can support an 8-bit RGB serial interface.

The module has an overall size of 102.4 x 65.6 x 1.6mm. The 95.04 x 53.85mm active area supports a resolution of 480x272.

The new Active Matrix drive scheme offers many advantages over the previous Passive Matrix (PMOLED) drive scheme. Compared to full color PMOLEDs, Active Matrix OLEDs can achieve higher typical luminance (200 cd/m2 vs. 90 cd/m2), a better contrast ratio (10000:1 vs. 1000:1). and have lower overall power consumption

LGDisplay are cautious about OLEDs , do not see big investments soon

LGD’s aim is to approach investment of AM OLED in a careful way. Kwon said, “Expect for Nokia, no company shows aggressive leadership. Considering productivity and original cost, there will be no big investments for AM OLED.” LGD considered mass-production investment for AM OLED panel but decided to invest in only 1 line of 3.5 generation. And Toki was selected as major equipment supplier for equipment.
