Japanese government and companies team up to develop OLED tech

The Japanese government will team up with several Japanese companies to develop key-technologies for producing large-size OLED panels. The aim is to cut the development cost for the Japanese companies, to be better able to compete against Samsung and LG, and the Japanese government will pitch in around 32$M.

Sony - we are "awfully" close to selling 27" OLED TVs

Stan Glasgow (president and COO of Sony Electronics) says that Sony is making progress on moving to larger OLED screen sizes. At the moment, Sony sells an 11-inch OLED TV for $2,500, which means it is hardly a mass market product. The next step, he says, will be a 27-inch version, followed by a 40-inch version. He says they are “awfully close” to selling a 27-inch OLED version commercially. The key for Sony is to find ways to automate the production of the OLED screens, which right now require significant amounts of labor.

Kodak OLED Systems Information and Interview

I recently had the chance to interview Mr. Corey Hewitt and Dr. James Buntaine from Kodak OLED Systems. Kodak is where OLEDs were first discovered, and they are still in the fore-front of the technology. This is going to be a long article - these guys have given me a lot of background info, even before answering my questions. But first let's introduce Corey and James:

Dell's CEO is speaking to WSJ's Mossberg, and he hints about using Sony's OLED displays this year -

Mossberg: Former Dell CEO has said that R&D is a waste. That still true?
Dell: No. There's tens of billions of dollars spent in the industry and while we definitely see value here, we're also into leveraging the tech from other partners. For example, the 0.3mm OLED that Sony showed.
Mossberg: You going to use those?
Dell, teasingly, says "You'll see some great stuff from us this year...
