OLED panel makers

Pioneer, based in Japan, was founded in 1938, and is involved in home and car electronics. Pioneer was the first company to actually make OLED displays, but have exited from the OLED display market in 2005 (and will stop making TVs altogether in 2010).

In February 2010, Pioneer announced it has entered the OLED Lighting market, together with Mitsubishi Chemicals. Pioneer will be the one to actually make the panels, and Mitsubishi will market and sell them. They plan to start mass production in 2011, with a sales target of $335 million in 2015 and $1.1 billion in 2020.

Innolux, established in 2003, is based in Taiwan, and is producing TFT-LCD displays. In 2009 Innolux has acquired CMO and TPO, two companies that had OLED subsidiaries. The new company will be called Chimei Innolux. The actual acquisition will take place in May 2010, and we'll have to wait and see how if effects the OLED programs of the two acquired companies.

LG Display is a large maker of displays for TVs, computer screens and mobile devices. LG Display is making AMOLED displays, and are also working toward flexible OLEDs. 

In January 2009 LG Display showed a 15" AMOLED display that might be ready to produce within 2009 if they find any customers. There are rumors that Apple has signed a deal with LG to supply them OLED displays for iPhones, iPods and Netbooks. In March 2009 LG said they will direct more investment on OLEDs, and new production lines will start making panels in 2H 2010.

In June 2009 we have talked with their OLED displays sales & marketing VP. LG plans to offer 15" OLED TVs in Korea by November 2009: these will have 1366x768 resolution, 1.7mm width and a 100,000:1 contrast ratio.

In December 2009, LG bought Kodak's OLED unit.

COMEDD is the Center for Organic Materials and Electronic Devices, based in Dresden. In COMEDD, they try to combine the know-how of the Fraunhofer IPMS and production infrastructure.

The aim of the center is to carry out customer and application specific research, development and pilot fabrication of novel device concepts, and manufacturing methods in the field of vacuum-processed organic materials, with a technology focus on semiconducting organic materials (small molecules).

The activities cover three main application areas, organic based lighting and signage technology, organic solar cell technology, and OLED-on-CMOS applications.

COMEDD offers research and developments on innovative fabrication equipment based on three fabrication lines: a rigid substrate fabrication line (370x470 mm² substrates) for lighting and organic solar cell applications, an OLED-on-CMOS line on 200mm wafer size and a roll-to-roll prototype line for flexible substrates. Based on this infrastructure COMEDD can offer product developments starting with the system concept till pilot fabrication level.

PolyPhotonix is based in the UK, and are using CDT's P-OLED IP to create OLED Lighting panels. Their first production line is now active at PETEC (UK's Printed Electronics center)

Founded in 2007, MicroOLED is a privately held company based Grenoble, France.

MicroOLED designs and develops high-performance OLED microdisplays for near-to-eye applications. MicroOLED wishes to enable low power consumption, mobile HDTV in video-glasses, headsets, etc.

Truly Semiconductors are into Flat Panel Displays (R&D, manufacturing and marketing), and are based in Hong kong. Truly provide a full range of panels, including OLEDs. Truly's plant (which contains 1 OLED production line) is located in Shanwei, Guangdong province, China.
