UDC Renewed its Commercial Supply Agreement with LG Display

UDC announced today that it had renewed its Commercial Supply Agreement with LG Display. The previous agreement terminated on June 30 2008, and the new one is effective till June 30 2009.

Apple files a patent for an iPhone with two backlights... they should use an OLED!

Apple has filed a patent for an iPhone display that has two backlights. The idea is to have a second low-power backlight that will be always on. So you can easily check if you have messages, or other stuff without having to turn the main display on.

I think it's time Apple thought about using an OLED - in which no backlight is required, and if you just make a small screensaver with the time and messages status - it will draw very little power.

Merck acquires the entire IP portfolio of OLED-T

Merck KGaA today announced the completion of an agreement to acquire the entire intellectual property (IP) portfolio of the company OLED-T with immediate effect. As we reported last month, OLED-T has gone into liquidation. We don't have any information on the financial side of this agreement.

OLED-T had an IP portfolio in the field of electron transport and phosphorescent-emitting materials for OLED application.

We hear rumors that OLED-T has been closed - gone into liquidation - and indeed their web-site is down. This is sad news, and rather surprising one, as they secured 7M$ just two years ago.

OLED-T was developing high efficiency and long life-time materials for OLED displays. OLED-T had over 60 patents, and I wonder which company will pick those up.

Konica Minolta and UDC Announce OLED Technology License Agreement for Lighting Applications

Konica Minolta and Universal Display Corporation today announced the signing of an OLED Technology License Agreement. Under the agreement, Konica Minolta will be able to integrate Universal Display’s proprietary OLED technologies into Konica Minolta’s white OLED lighting products, thus securing Konica Minolta to accelerate commercialization and to strengthen the competitiveness of its white OLEDs.

GTT to sell PMOLED patent

Global Technology Transfer Group (GTT) has announced the availability of a patent portfolio dealing with improved OLED illumination stability and improvements to AMEL technology. This portfolio is entitled 'Display Technologies Patent Portfolio' and consists of six US patents, one that relates to OLED technology and five that relate to AMEL technology.

The OLED patent relates to an improved passive matrix OLED device that provides for a control mechanism to maintain uniform light output from individual pixel elements throughout the illumination period. The invention additionally claims a passive matrix OLED device that provides for a control mechanism that prevents overshoot and undershoot illumination.

Kodak is where OLEDs were first discovered, and they are still in the fore-front of the technology. 3DIcon Corporation, a development-stage technology company, today announced that its research team at the University of Oklahoma (OU), working under a sponsored research agreement (SRA), has filed a provisional patent application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, covering the rights to the invention of a new optically controlled Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) that can be applied to forming novel light-activated 3D, as well as 2D displays.

"This patent creates a promising new approach to creating 3D images, which to our knowledge is not currently being pursued by any of our competitors. This technology is a truly unique avenue to creating 3D displays and has evolved from our multidisciplinary research strategy at OU," stated 3DIcon President Vivek Bhaman.

Samsung acquires Clairvoyante's IP assets OLED lifetime IP

Samsung Electronics has acquired the IP assets of Clairvoyante Inc, an IP licensing company responsible for the development of PenTile subpixel rendering display technology and associated gamut mapping algorithms. The IP includes extending the lifetime of high-resolution mobile OLED displays.

Apple files patent for LED dynamic keyboard

Apple has filed a patent for a dynamic-keyboard - where each key is lighted up by a LED. It's an interesting development considering Art.Lebedev is working on such a keyboard for a long time (the Optimus Keyboard).
