Samsung SDI Board Approves Plan to Absorb Portable Display Unit

The world's largest manufacturer of plasma display panel screens plans to complete the merger of the unit, Samsung OLED Co., by the end of March. Samsung OLED was originally a 51:49 joint venture with Japan's NEC Corp. in 2001. Samsung SDI took over all of NEC's stake and patents in the unit early last year. Samsung OLED, capitalized at 174 billion won (US$167 million), posted net profit of 70 billion won in 2004 on sales of 302 billion won last year.
